Emily Nelson’s 14 aces lead No. 6 Canby in sweep over MCC

No. 6 Canby 3, MCC 1
SLAYTON — Senior setter and rightside hitter Emily Nelson served an astonishing 14 aces along with 12 kills and 31 set assists to help the No. 6 Canby volleyball team defeat Murray County Central Tuesday night in both team’s season opener, in sets of 25-7, 20-25, 25-17 and 25-15.
MCC bounced back with a win in the second set to even the score up after facing early struggles in the first, yet Canby returned the favor and also found an answer to finish off the night.
Bynn Kockelman led the Lancers with a team-high 14 kills, while Amya Verhelst also had another 12 to match with Nelson.
Jaryn Houseman anchored down the defense for Canby with a team-high 23 digs, while Grace Hasnen followed with 10 and Kockelman and Verhelst had seven each.
Kockelman was also a strong playmaker for the Lancers, who recorded 20 set assists on the night to partner along with Nelson.

Murray County Central (0-1) stays in Slayton to start the season, hosting Lakeview for its next game on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.
Canby (1-0) next goes on the road to take on Pipestone Area (0-0) on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
No. 10 Wabasso 3, Lakeview 1
WABASSO — Sara Carlson’s 40 set assists and Kenley Guetter’s double-double of 13 digs and 12 kills led the Wabasso volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Lakeview in its home opener Tuesday night in sets of 22-25, 25-12, 25-18 and 25-19.
Tuesday was Lakeview’s season opener, and opened up the match with a win over the Rabbits, who are ranked No. 10 in the Class A preseason polls by the Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Association.
Jersey Stensrud led the Lakers defensively with 15 digs, while Kiara Hinz followed with 13. Taylor Hinz had another seven in the back row.
Offensively for Lakeview, Aubrey Nething had a team-high five kills, while Kiara and Taylir Hinz, along with Allison Isaacs and Laia Javens had four apiece.
Nicole Schwartz had a team-high six set assists.
Although Wabasso faced an early challenge and dropped the first set, the Rabbits locked down defensively in the second set to even out the score, only allowing Lakeview 12 points.
The Lakers stayed within reach the final two sets, but Wabasso ultimately took the game behind an all-around team effort.
To add to Guetter, Audrey Johnson had a team-high 18 digs while Leah Mathiowetz had another nine. Carly Fenger and Camryn Irlbeck finished the night with 11 and nine kills, respectively.
Irlbeck and Guetter were aggressive at the front of the net with 10 and eight blocks, making it hard for the Lakers to get around.
Carlson also had a trio of service aces, while Fenger, Guetter and Britta Brand all had two.
Lakeview (0-1) next plays the second of three consecutive road games to start the season on Thursday, when it heads to Tyler to take on No. 5 RTR (0-2) at 7:15 p.m.
Wabasso (2-0) remains on its home court to host New Ulm Cathedral (1-1) on Thursday, Sept. 4 at 7:15 p.m.
Hancock 3, YME 2
HANCOCK — Alana Almich’s 19 kills drove the Yellow Medicine East volleyball team in a back-and-forth non-conference match against Hancock on Tuesday. Her play helped YME claim two of the first three games, 25-19 and 25-21. Yet, Hancock won game 2 25-21 and won each of the last two sets by scores of 25-11 and 15-9 to claim a five-set win over the Sting.
In addition to Almich, Abbey Bones also contributed 10 kills and an ace block while Bailey Mortenson chipped in another six.
Facilitating the offense, Lexi Stengel finished the night with 31 assists and an ace block.
In the back row, Ella Cherveny led the team with nine digs while Kourtney Peterson and Bayli Sneller tallied six and five, respectively. Sneller also finished the night with five kills.
Yellow Medicine East (0-2) next takes on Westbrook-Walnut Grove (1-0) in Westbrook on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
WWG 3, Springfield 0
WESTBROOK — Consistent service and well-rounded offense helped the Westbrook-Walnut Grove start the season in style in its home opener on Tuesday. Hadley Jenniges and Sydney Foster went a combined 21 of 22 from the service line, with Jenniges also facilitating a balanced offense as a setter, as the Chargers swept Springfield 25-21, 25-20, 25-11.
On the finishing end of Jenniges’ set assists, the Chargers had several players getting involved. Leah Carter led the team with nine kills while Carlie Ross and Foster added nine and six, respectively.
Carter and Ross were also among the team’s defensive leaders. Carter was effective up front with a pair of ace blocks while Ross’ 11 digs trailed only Leah VanDewiele’s 12.
Jenniges tallied three service aces on the night while Foster contributed another.
Westbrook-Walnut Grove (1-0) will remain on its home court for the week, hosting Yellow Medicine East (0-2) on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
ACGC 3, Dawson-Boyd 0
GROVE CITY — A big night from libero Kylar Hjelmeland wasn’t enough to get the Dawson-Boyd volleyball team in the win column on Tuesday night. Hjelmeland led the team with 13 digs and went 10 of 10 from the service line, but the Blackjacks lost 25-12, 25-20, 25-16 as Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City ended its five-game skid to start the season.
Kadyn Perkins put together a well-rounded effort for the Blackjacks, notching a team-leading seven kills with nine digs and a pair of aces. Hjelmeland was second on the team with six kills and also contributed a pair of blocks.
Claire Stratmoen finished the night with 17 set assists for the Blackjacks.
Dawson-Boyd (0-2) next heads to Graceville for a matchup against Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley (1-0) on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.
RCW 3, RRC 0
LAMBERTON — A strong third set wasn’t enough to shift momentum in the Red Rock Central volleyball team’s favor when it took on Renville County West in a non-conference match on Tuesday. The Falcons got stronger as the night went on but fell in straight sets, 25-9, 25-10, 25-21.
Keena Kosel and Natasha Erickson both had strong nights at the service line, going a combined 13 for 13 with two aces for Kosel. Kosel was also the team’s leader in digs with eight while Erickson contributed 10 set assists.
Shylin Hagert contributed some front row defense with a pair of blocks and tied Ally Linder for second on the team with three kills, trailing only Abby Evans’ four.
Red Rock Central (0-2) plays the second of three consecutive home games on Tuesday, hosting Windom (2-0) at 7:15 p.m.
Windom 3, TMB 1
WINDOM — A first-set victory wasn’t enough to spark the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton volleyball team to victory on Tuesday night. The Panthers won game 1 of their non-conference matchup against Windom 25-16, but the Eagles claimed the next three sets by scores of 25-15, 25-22 and 25-15 to defeat TMB in four sets.
