COTTONWOOD — The Cottonwood Cardinals split its final homestand of the season in a pair of Land O’Duck League games with a 4-3 walk-off in 10 innings over the Ortonville Rox on Saturday, before suffering a 21-3 loss to Chokio in mercy rule Sunday afternoon.

Seth Boerboom pitched the entirety of Saturday’s game, shutting out Ortonville for seven consecutive innings while allowing no walks.

“He’s [Boerboom] been solid all year,” Cottonwood manager Jason Fischer said. “I think that was his sixth or seventh win of the year [6-0] … He just throws strikes, and it’s very effective. He did a really nice job.”

Cottonwood tallied seven hits and three errors, to the Rox’s 12 hits and three errors.

The Cardinals faced struggles on the mound on Sunday, going through six different pitchers and were ultimately unable to find an answer offensively.

Chokio put together a nine-run fourth inning while recording 17 hits, while holding Cottonwood to six hits.

The Coyotes finished with three errors while the Cardinals had five.

Heading into its final regular season game on Sunday at Rosen, Cottonwood holds a 7-4 league record, sitting in fifth place of the standings. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m.

“We have had a really good year,” Fischer said. “Everyone is excited, and it will be nice to get a win next weekend.”

GAME 1 (10 inn.)

Cottonwood 4, Ortonville 3

Justin Timm went 4 for 4 at the plate to lead Cottonwood in its walk-off victory, while Boerboom tossed six strikeouts throughout his 10 innings on the mound.

With a tied score in the bottom of the 10th with two outs and runners on third and second, Noah Jensen hit an infield fly ball and reached base off an error, which allowed Timm to score the winning run and end the game with a walk-off.

“Been kind of that year, we’ve been coming back from all these [close games],” Fischer said. “We’ve been putting ourselves in a hole and coming back, it seems like the guys have been fighting all year. [Saturday] was a good win.”

The Rox took a 3-0 lead following the top of the third inning behind a pair of RBIs, but Boerboom locked them down the remainder of the game.

Cottonwood got on the board in the bottom of the frame with Timm scoring off a wild pitch, who initially singled on a fly ball to center field.

After four more scoreless innings, the Cardinals tied the game up 3-3 with two runs in the eighth inning. Ayden St. Pierre charged home off a Cody St. Aubin sacrifice fly, and Jensen followed that up with a line-drive RBI double to left field to score Timm.

Timm also led the Cardinals with three runs on the day. St. Pierre followed by going 2 for 4 at the plate.

GAME 2

Chokio 21, Cottonwood 3 (7 inn.)

The Cardinals struggled on both ends of the field on Sunday, falling behind 7-1 after Chokio scored a prompt four runs in the opening inning with another three in the second.

“We just didn’t throw strikes … Then, we didn’t make some of the plays,” Fischer said. “[Chokio] deserved it, they had a lot of hits. It mainly boils down to pitching, and when you can’t throw strikes, you don’t win very often.”

Overall, the Cardinals allowed 11 walks and 14 earned runs with five strikeouts.

Although Cottonwood scored a run in the first, fourth and sixth inning, the Coyotes’ nine-run fourth inning was the dagger. The Coyotes led 16-1 and put the game to mercy-rule territory.

Early errors hurt Cottonwood, who committed two in the first inning that allowed two of the runs.

Noah Jensen accounted for the Cardinal’s first run in the bottom of the first off a Cain Herigon RBI single, who reached base on an error. Jensen originally walked, and stole second on a passed ball.

Cottonwood had bases loaded with one out and potential to tie the game up early, yet Chokio completed an infield double play at first and second to end the inning.

Two of Chokio’s three runs in the second inning came from a wild pitch and passed ball.

A series of RBIs, including two doubles, allowed Chokio to score its nine runs in the fourth.

Chokio had bases loaded with two outs, and Cottonwood third baseman Taiven Isaackson fielded a ground ball for a fielder’s choice to put an end to the rally.

Jordan Fischer and Isaackson scored Cottonwood’s final two runs of the day, in the fourth and sixth inning respectively, off a pair of RBI singles.

Isaackson started on the mound for Cottonwood the first two innings, tossing a pair of strikeouts while allowing four walks, five earned runs and six hits. He was relieved by Brady Enstad for the next 1 1/3 innings, allowing three walks and three earned runs.

The remainder of Cottonwood’s pitchers split the game with an inning apiece.

“We’re just trying to improve,” coach Fischer said. I think we found out that if we pitch good and play defense, we got a chance to win every game.”
