Buttermakers down Lakers behind Irlbeck’s six RBIs

Amateur baseball roundup July 7, 2025

HADLEY — Austin Irlbeck brought the fireworks at the plate for Hadley’s Sunday matchup against Heron Lake. Irlbeck hit a grand slam, two doubles and a single for six RBIs in the game as Hadley claimed an 18-0 win in seven innings.

The Buttermakers jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning and added another eight runs in the second. They kept the Lakers off the scoreboard for the duration of the game, and added five more runs for themselves in the final three frames.

In addition to Irlbeck, Alex Petersen and Joe Larson each singled twice for one RBI, while Danny Blankenship and Dylan Kluis each doubled once for two RBIs.

Tucker Sorenson earned the win to improve to 5-1 on the mound for Hadley. He threw the first three shutout innings, striking out eight batters while allowing one hit and one walk. In relief, Avery Weber and Logan Miller each pitched two shutout innings. Miller struck out four batters while allowing one hit and a walk, while Weber struck out two batters while giving up two hits.

Hadley improves to 12-6 overall on the season and next goes on the road to take on Luverne tonight at 7:30 p.m.

New Ulm 2, Lamberton 1

LAMBERTON — New Ulm’s pair of first-inning runs were too much for the Lamberton Long Sox to overcome in a Tomahawk East matchup on Monday. The Long Sox’s pitching shut out the Brewers for the remainder of the game, but they couldn’t generate enough offense to overcome the early deficit in the 2-1 loss.

Corey Schaefer singled before scoring on a Justin Hoffman double to start the game, and Hoffman went on to score on a ground out. The Long Sox retired each of the next three batters after Hoffman to escape the inning without further damage and shut out New Ulm for the remainder of the game.

Eli Fest put Lamberton on the scoreboard on the first, reaching second base on a single and an error and scoring on a Neil Eichten double.

Fest also pitched all nine innings for Lamberton in the loss, striking out 12 batters while limiting New Ulm to five hits and three walks.

Lamberton falls to 11-6 with the loss and will go on the road to take on Stark tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Willmar 14, Wabasso 11

WABASSO — Adryen Tietz’s home run highlighted a big day at the plate for the Wabasso Jaxx in a Corn Belt League matchup against the Willmar Rails on Sunday. The Jaxx finished with 11 hits on the day as a team, but fell 14-11 to the Rails, who tallied 16 hits.

In addition to Tietz’s solo homer, which came in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to 10-7, the Jaxx also got three singles from Colton Taylor, two RBIs and a double from Josh Guetter and two singles each from Joe Liebl and Carter Guetter.

Austin Gunderson gave the Jaxx an early lead when he reached base on a dropped third strike and scored on an error at short. Yet, Willmar capitalized on two Wabasso errors and a wild pitch to put up six second-inning runs and never looked back.

Liebl pitched the first four innings for Wabasso, giving up four earned and six total runs on seven hits and three walks. He also struck out eight batters.

Wabasso started to fight its way back into the game in the third inning. A Gunderson walk and a Taylor single put two runners on, and the two scored on a wild pitch and a Liebl single. Sam Guetter also reached on a fielder’s choice, advanced when Chase Guetter and CJ Their reached on a single and an error, and scored on a bases-loaded walk to Caleb Kemp to trim the deficit to 6-4.

Liebl singled and scored on an error in the fifth, and Maxim Dillon walked before scoring the tying run in the sixth on a Max Fuhr single. Yet, the Rails responded with two more runs in the sixth and another three in the seventh to maintain their lead.

Gunnar Banks hit a three-run home run to straightaway center field in the ninth to seal the Rails’ win.

Fuhr pitched two innings of relief, allowing five earned runs on six hits and three walks to get charged with the loss. Josh Guetter also gave up three earned runs on three hits over three frames of relief.

Wabasso falls to 5-11 with the loss and next goes on the road to take on Sacred Heart on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Dumont 8, Cottonwood 7

DUMONT — A five-run surge in the top of the ninth to tie the game wasn’t enough for the Cottonwood Cardinals to pull out a win over the Dumont Saints on Sunday in Land O’ Ducks play. The Saints put a pair of runners on base in the bottom of the ninth with a walk and an error before an Austin Ballhagen sacrifice fly handed the Cardinals an 8-7 loss.

The Saints held a 7-2 lead heading into the ninth and retired each of the first two batters of the frame. Yet, a Jacob Rausch single and a Seth Boerboom walk put two runners on and breathed life into Cottonwood.

Taiven Isaackson got the rally going with an RBI single and Caine Herigon walked to load the bases before Jordan Fischer hit a grand slam to tie the game up. Yet, a strikeout ended the rally and gave Dumont the opportunity to walk off the game in the bottom of the frame.

Boerboom pitched the game’s first seven innings, giving up seven earned runs on 13 hits in the no-decision. He also struck out five batters while walking four.

In addition to Fischer contributing with a grand slam and a walk, Rausch also had a double and a single, Isaackson singled twice and Boerboom walked three times while singling once.

Austin Timm was charged with the loss after giving up one unearned run on a hit and a walk over 1 1/3 innings of work.

Cottonwood falls to 6-3 with the loss. After losing back-to-back games, the Cardinals will look to regain their momentum when they host the Ortonville Rox on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Starting at $3.95/week.
