MARSHALL — In a game that saw 33 combined hits and just one scoreless inning, Cody Wichmann singled to center right field with bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Marshall A’s a 12-11 walk-off victory over the Willmar Rails Sunday night in a Corn Belt League matchup.

“I thought in my mind [coming to bat], ‘There was nobody on base, just go up there clear-minded, go out there and just perform,'” Wichmann said. “We were down a little bit, but we finally battled back in the ninth there and made it into extras. It was awesome to get a win with the guys again, and hopefully start that winning streak.”

Marshall and Willmar fought in a highly-competitive game on both ends of the field, with the A’s facing a slight deficit nearly the entire night.

Willmar took a 9-4 lead after a five-run fifth inning, yet big hits from manager Ryan Schwagel, including a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth and a game-tying RBI single in the bottom of the ninth, helped Marshall stay in the game.

“It was just a tight game, but then all of a sudden we were down by five or six and it kind of got to us a little bit,” Wichmann said. “We battled back … And we finally got the job done. It was fun.”

The game, in which only the third inning went scoreless, also saw four double plays on the night, two each from both teams.

Amid Marshall’s late comeback after the Rails took an 11-8 lead with another two runs in the seventh, Marshall returned the favor and brought itself within a run in bottom of the eighth.

Josh Kraft and Tyler Wichmann accounted for the two runs, Kraft scoring from second base off a Coby Brownlee single, while Tyler went in off AJ Toulouse’s RBI single line drive to center field.

After holding Willmar scoreless in the top of the ninth, Schwagel’s single line drive to center field in the bottom ran in Talan Plante from second base to force the game to extra innings, 11-11. Plante first got on base with a double to deep left field.

“[I was] just seeing the ball well, just trying to put the barrel on the ball, and it was just my night tonight,” Schwagel said.

After another quick three outs while Willmar was at-bat in the tenth with an outfield catch by Zach Olsen and a pair of ground outs, the A’s returned to the plate and loaded the bases up with no outs to put themselves in scoring position.

Brownlee was walked, while Stelter laid down a successful bunt and Toulouse was intentionally walked.

Cody stepped up to the plate and hit three consecutive foul balls before hitting an outfield line drive to score Brownlee from third and end the game, as the dugout ran out to the field to greet him.

“It was just, ‘Next pitch’ mentality,” Schwagel said. “We can’t do nothing about what happened last inning, and just stay up. We knew we’ve been hitting pretty good this year, so we knew they were going to come and we just got to stay in and give ourselves a chance.”

Marshall finished the game with 17 hits and two errors, to Willmar’s 16 hits and four errors.

For the A’s, Kraft went 4 for 5 at the plate, while Schwagel and Plante followed with three hits each. Schwagel led with a trio of RBIs.

Plante and Kraft also shared a team-high of three runs.

Jake Eben pitched the first 4 1/3 innings, tossing six strikeouts while allowing three walks, seven earned runs and 11 hits.

Owen Kesteloot relieved for 2 2/3 innings, and finished with four strikeouts, one walk and three hits with no earned runs.

Logan Tomasek pitched the final three innings, allowing one walk and two hits.

“It was a hot day, and everybody knew that everybody’s day was going to be shortened [while pitching], Schwagel said. “Just got to battle through it, and it worked out for us.”

The game was tied 4-4 going into the fifth inning, after a Rails’ double play in the bottom of the fourth helped Willmar return to the plate to take its 9-4 lead with five runs off five hits.

Willmar managed to keep bases occupied, and its first two runs of the rally came from a sacrifice fly and an RBI single, both to right field. The next two runs were from a passed ball stealing home, and the Rails ended the inning with an RBI single to center field before Cody caught a line drive at shortstop.

The A’s continued to chip away and brought themselves back into the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, to cut into a 9-7 deficit.

Schwagel stepped up and sent the ball past the center field fence for his two-run homer, scoring Kraft who was initially walked.

Tomasek walked, and charged home off a Cody double to deep right field before Willmar could finish the inning with a strikeout.

Marshall again kept active on the offensive end with another run in the sixth inning to come back within a run, down 9-8.

The A’s were coming off a 2-1 walk-off loss to the Raymond Rockets on the road Friday evening, which snapped a six-game win streak.

“It starts by winning the first pitch, and it starts right now,” Wichmann said. “We’re just going to keep moving forward, and start on Wednesday again with Granite Falls.”

Marshall (9-4) has a full slate this week, and will next host Granite Falls on Wednesday with a 7:30 p.m. first pitch. The A’s will travel to Bird Island on Friday at 7:30 p.m. before returning to Legion Field for the Hall of Fame game on Sunday at 5 p.m.

Starting at $3.95/week.
