Mudcats split final games at Alex tourney

ALEXANDRIA — The Marshall Senior Legion baseball team wrapped up play at the Alexandria Tournament with a win and a loss on Saturday. The Mudcats defeated Sartell 7-5 to conclude pool play at 1-2, but fell 4-2 to Watertown in the finale.

The Tigers dropped each of their first two games of the tournament on Friday, falling 2-1 to Tri-City Blue and 7-1 to Alexandria.

Marshall drops to 2-4 on the season with the loss and will look to bounce back when it hosts its annual Wood Bat Tournament this weekend at Legion Field. The Mudcats will open the tournament against Kasson-Mantorville on Friday and 7:30 p.m. before taking on Renner and Barnum/Moose Lake/Willow River at 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. The tournament will conclude on Sunday, with the Mudcats playing at either 9 or 11:30 a.m. at Legion Field or Yankee Field in Milroy, pending their pool play results.

Marshall 7, Sartell 5

Marshall claimed victory over Sartell in its pool play finale with a four-run go-ahead fifth inning.

Andrew Stelter led off the inning with a double, advanced to third on a Liam Kruse single and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. JR Vierstraete then singled to put runners on the corners, Levi Maeyaert dropped down a sacrifice bunt to score Kruse and Braxton Koster tripled in Vierstraete for a 6-3 Marshall lead.

Logan Phillippe earned the win on the mound, giving up five earned runs on 12 hits and a pair of walks over 6 2/3 innings. Koster struck out the lone batter he faced to earn the save.

Sartell scored a pair of first-inning runs to take an early lead before a Vierstraete single and two hit batters loaded the bases with one out in the top of the second. Jensen doubled in Vierstraete, but Koster was tagged out at home and Sartell got a ground out to avoid any further damage.

An RBI double brought Sartell’s lead back to 3-1, but Marshall answered with a pair of runs to tie the game up in the fourth.

Maeyaert was hit by a pitch and Koster walked to put the tying run on base. A Deagan Maurice single scored one run and Jensen drove in Koster on a ground out.

Stelter and Vierstraete each notched a pair of hits in the game, as well as a walk for Vierstraete, while Jensen drove in two runs on the day.

Watertown 4,

Marshall 2

The game was tied at one run apiece heading into the fifth, but three singles and a double gave Watertown three runs to take a 4-1 lead, presenting the Mudcats with a deficit they never overcame.

Koster singled in the bottom of the sixth, advanced on an error, stole third and scored on a wild pitch. Yet, the Arrows retired three of the other four batters in the frame to prevent a Marshall comeback.

Logan Miller was tagged for the loss, giving up four earned runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts. Koster also pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Watertown struck first in the top of the third, but Clayton Jones singled and scored on a pair of singles from Stelter and Kruse to tie up the game.

Jones finished with two hits to lead the Marshall offense.
