Marshall Black’s 11-game win streak ends on split with St. Peter

ST. PETER — St. Peter handed the Marshall Junior Legion Black baseball team its first loss of the season in a doubleheader on Thursday. St. Peter held off Black for a 4-3 win in the opener, ending its 11-game win streak to start the season. Yet, Marshall bounced back to claim the second game by a score of 7-0.

Marshall improves to 12-1 on the season with the split and will look to return to its winning ways when it hosts Sleepy Eye at the Milroy Irish Yard on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

GAME 1

St. Peter 4, Marshall 3

With the game tied at three runs apiece heading into the bottom of the sixth, St. Peter got the extra push they needed to come out on top. Joe Greenig singled and stole second with two outs. Kyler Link then drove him in with a single to center field, making the score 4-3 in favor of the Saints.

Noah Pieper pitched the first 5 2/3 innings for Marshall, giving up four earned runs on six hits and six walks with six strikeouts in the loss. Cannon Craigmile retired the lone batter he faced in relief.

Black scored the tying run in the top of the fifth. Ethan Weedman walked and advanced to second on an Ethan Boeck single, and Pieper came up with another single to drive him in and knot up the score at 3-3.

Marshall took an early lead with some success at the plate in the top of the first. Boeck singled, stole second and scored the go-ahead run on a Pieper single. Pieper then advanced to third on a steal and a passed ball before scoring on a Trae Bailey single, but St. Peter answered with a run in the bottom of the frame to cut Marshall’s lead in half.

Boeck, Pieper and Tyler Kraft led Marshall with two hits each on the day, including two RBIs for Pieper and a walk for Kraft. 

St. Peter took their first lead with a pair of fourth-inning runs. Finley Olson walked and Ashton Guida singled, and a Brody Whipps ground out and a Max Welp single drove in the two runners for a 3-2 lead for St. Peter. 

Link threw the first five innings for St. Peter, giving up three runs on four hits and three walks. In relief, Greenig threw a pair of shutout innings while limiting Marshall to one hit.

Marshall’s bats bounced back swiftly in the second game. Walks to Weedman and Boeck and a Jackson Sirovy single loaded the bases with one out. Kraft worked a walk to force in the first of six runs in the inning and Kael Frana grounded out to drive in another.

Cole Raley walked to reload the bases before a passed ball and Keynan Coequyt reaching base on an error pushed across another pair of runs. Another pair of passed balls then allowed two more Marshall runs to score to cap off the inning.

Tyler Kraft got the start on the mound in game two, pitching three scoreless innings while limiting St. Peter to one hit and a walk with a pair of strikeouts. Bailey and Frana each pitched a scoreless, hitless inning of relief to close out the game, with Frana logging two strikeouts and a pair of walks.

Kraft scored in the bottom of the second when he and Frana hit consecutive doubles, giving Black the game’s final run.

Weedman led Marshall’s offense on the day with a single and two walks, while Kraft logged a double and a walk while Boeck and Raley each walked twice.

Thomas Johnson pitched the first 1 2/3 innings for St. Peter, giving up three earned runs on four hits and six walls. Greenig pitched 1 2/3 hitless and scoreless innings of relief, walking one batter.
