A mind-blowing victory

Marshall Black earns dramatic win to cap off home tournament

MARSHALL — Complete-game pitching outings were a staple of Marshall Black’s success at its home Junior Legion over the tournament. Each of Marshall’s starters in the four-game tournament went the full seven innings, including a 5-1 win over Brandon Valley with Noah Pieper on the mound in the pool stage finale, and a 5-4 win with Noah Frazee on the mound in the championship round against Renner, S.D.

A four-run inning allowed Renner to tie up the championship game in the sixth, but Cannon Craigmile hit an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to score Ethan Boeck and give Marshall the walk-off win. The hit was Craigmile’s first career walk-off.

“I kind of just lost my mind running down the line, it was a great feeling,” Craigmile said of the hit. “This team has been so good. Our winning streak just keeps going, so it was a great day to get another win.”

Trae Bailey logged a team-leading four hits across Marshall’s two wins on Saturday while Craigmile, Andrew Lee and Boeck each added another two.

“I just got down on the count and fouled my way off, and it was timely hitting so it just came at the right time,” Bailey said of his ability to see the ball in the batter’s box on the day.

Black’s performance at the tournament keeps its record a perfect 11-0 on the season. Marshall will return to action on Thursday when it goes on the road for a doubleheader against St. Peter at 4 p.m.

GAME 1

Marshall 5, Brandon Valley 1

Bailey led Marshall’s efforts at the plate against Brandon Valley, accounting for three of the team’s seven hits, as well as an RBI and a run. Boeck also finished with two singles and an RBI while Jackson Sirovy tallied two RBIs on one hit in the win.

Pieper continued Marshall’s trend of consistent pitching in the tournament with a complete-game effort. He struck out nine batters in the game while giving up one earned run on four singles and a walk.

Marshall took the lead in the second inning and never let go. Bailey singled and Frazee and Tyler Kraft reached on consecutive errors to load the bases on the inning’s first three at-bats. Bailey then scored on a wild pitch and Frazee scored on a Sirovy sacrifice fly.

A walk and a single got Brandon Valley on the board in the top of the third, but Marshall’s pitching and error-free defense kept Brandon Valley from ever tying the game.

Marshall continued to extend its lead in the bottom of the frame when Ethan Boeck singled and advanced to second on a Craigmile walk.

Brandon Valley pulled off a 4-3 double play, but Boeck advanced to third on the play and scored on a Bailey single.

Tyler Kraft led off the fourth with a double before scoring on a Sirovy single, and Sirovy scored the game’s final run on a Boeck ground out to make the score 5-1.

CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND

Marshall 5, Renner 4

With the game tied at four runs apiece, Renner retired the first Marshall batter of the final frame. Yet, Boeck hit a hard ground ball to third, forcing a Renner error to put the tying run on base.

Once on base as the tying run, Boeck advanced to second on a passed ball to get in scoring position. With a 1-2 count to Craigmile after Craigmile fouled off five consecutive pitches, a passed ball that didn’t even reach the grass behind the catcher allowed Boeck to turn on the jets and get to third base.

“I just knew Cannon was going to put something in play. I knew if it got past the infield, I was just going to have to put my head down and score. All I was thinking about was that winning run,” Boeck said.

Another ball brought Craigmile to a full count in the 11-pitch at-bat, but he hit the low-and-inside payoff pitch into right field to drive in Boeck for the game-winning run.

“It feels like a relief to get this walk-off win, it was a tight one, but this team’s really got potential,” Boeck said. “I think we can go anywhere.”

Frazee got the start on the mound for Marshall, holding Renner scoreless over the first five of his seven frames on the mound. He gave up three earned runs on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts in the complete-game outing, Marshall’s fourth of the four-game tournament.

Renner trailed 4-0 heading into the sixth when its bats clicked into form. Two singles and a ground out gave them the inning’s first run. A strikeout put two away, but a walk and an errant pickoff attempt allowed another run to score, and a two-run single tied up the game for Renner.

A series of errors allowed Marshall to score the game’s go-ahead runs in the bottom of the second. Frazee reached base on a two-base error before scoring on an Andrew Lee single.

Keynan Coequyt then grounded a ball over to short, where Renner both fumbled the ball and made an errant throw, allowing Lee to score and bring Marshall’s lead to 2-0.

Lee singled in the fourth, advanced to second on a passed ball and got to third when Frazee was caught attempting to steal home. Ethan Weedman then singled him in for a run.

An inning later, Craigmile singled, advanced to second on a passed ball, stole third and then went home for a 4-0 lead when the throw to third sailed into the outfield.
