MORTON — Eighth grader Elijah Winn led a group of five Marshall boys golfers in the top five individuals of the Big South Conference meet at Dacotah Ridge Golf Club on Tuesday. Despite the three top individuals, Marshall finished as the runner-up to St. Peter.
Winn, Deacon Wing and Luke Ehlers were each named to the Big South All-Conference team after placing second, fourth and fifth in the meet, respectively.
The Tigers finished with a team score of 325, sandwiching them between St. Peter at 312 and New Ulm at 339 in the 14-team event.
Winn finished as the individual runner-up in the field of 84 after posting a 5-over 77 round. He started his day with eight consecutive pars and followed up with another five pars in a stretch of six holes to start the back nine.
Deacon Wing got off to a hot start with a birdie on his first hole, and added another pair on holes six and 13. The result was a fourth-place finish at 7-over 79.
Ehlers tied St. Peter’s Owen Matejcek and Kade Mata for fifth place with an 8-over 80. He closed out his front nine with four pars and a hole-6 birdie to finish as Marshall’s No. 3 scorer, tied with St. Peter’s No. 3 and No. 4.
While the Tigers had a strong showing at the top of the leaderboard, the Saints were dominant as well. Ethan Moreau was the individual winner with a 2-over 74, going 1-under on his final eight holes, while Kalvin Barfknecht placed third with a 6-over 78.
Keegan Fossum was Marshall’s No. 4 scorer, tying Waseca’s Braiden Nelson and Redwood Valley’s Lukas Means for 29th at 17-over 89.
Ethan Wendorff and Jaylen Koster also competed for Marshall, with Wendorff carding a 93 to place 47th and Koster shooting a 103 to place 74th.
Marshall will now get ready to compete in the Section 3AA tournament at Oakdale Golf Club in Buffalo Lake on Thursday, May 22 at 8 a.m. The Tigers won the meet by 24 strokes last year behind top-5 finishes from Ehlers, Jayden Manthei and Nate Panka. Manthei was the individual runner-up while Ehlers and Panka placed fifth and third, respectively, but each of Marshall’s top 5 golfers in the meet has since graduated.
