Tigers to be well-represented at state meet
Marshall earns 21 state qualifications, breaks 3 school records at 2AA championships

ST. PETER –The Marshall boys and girls track and field teams finished fourth and fifth, respectively, at the second day of the Section 2AA championships on Friday. The Tigers had a number of standout individual performances, including 21 state qualifications and three broken school records.
Josh Leibfried broke the Marshall school record in the 800 meters, finishing with a time of 1:56.35 to beat out Mankato East’s Jackson Henkels by less than a half-second to win the section title. Ethan Bly also finished fourth in the event for Marshall at 2:04.44 while Mykel Paulsen placed ninth at 2:11.42.
The Tigers also had a pair of school records fall in the relays. The girls 4×100-meter relay team of Paige Gillingham, Autumn Deutz, Chioma Onyeaghala and Aysia Miles placed third in the event at 49.89, trailing only Mankato West’s 47.65 and Mankato East’s 49.44, to earn a state tournament qualification. The boys 4×400-meter relay team also broke the program record by winning the event in 3:22.05, beating out runner-up Mankato East by 0.15 seconds. Keagen Anderson, Aidan Schuerman, Josh Leibfried and Alex Franson each competed in the event for the Tigers.
Schuerman also earned a pair of individual section titles, finishing first in the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles. Also in the sprints, Alex Franson and Keagen Anderson took the top two spots in the boys 400 meters to each advance to the state meet.
On the distance side, Sam Deutz won the 1600 meters at 4:27.07 to earn a state tournament berth.
The Marshall girls picked up a section title in the 4×800-meter relay, with Peyton Boeck, Katelyn Leibfried, Taleigha Bigler and Oakley Schneekloth completing the event in 9:30.91.
Boeck and Bigler also qualified as individuals for the state meet in the 400 and 800 meters, respectively.
Paige Gillingham finished as the shot put runner-up at 36-05 to make her second state meet appearance while Autumn Deutz qualified in the pole vault for the second consecutive finish with a third-place finish at 10-06.
The Marshall girls 4×400-meter relay team of Boeck, Elsie Deutz, Katelyn Leibfried and Bigler placed fifth at 4:04.94, meeting the standard to qualify for state, while the boys 4×800-meter team of Deutz, Bly, Paulsen and Leibfried did the same.
Jack Meier qualified for the state meet in the high jump for the second consecutive year with a runner-up section finish of 6-04.
The State Track and Field meet will be held at St. Michael-Albertville High School on June 10-12. Class AA preliminaries will be held on June 11 starting at 9 a.m. while finals will begin at 9 a.m. on June 12.
