Tigers earn No. 3 seed for sections
The Marshall baseball team has received the No. 3 seed for the Section 2AAA Tournament, and will face No. 6 New Ulm for the second straight year tomorrow at 6 p.m. at Legion Field in the first round.
The Tigers earned the third seed after finishing the regular season 17-4 overall, and the Eagles enter 14-7.
The two squared off in last season’s section tournament first round, with Marshall coming away with a 5-1 win.
The Tigers fell to Mankato East in the quarterfinals to drop to the elimination bracket, defeating St. Peter 7-3 and Albert Lea 2-1, but ultimately ended its season in the elimination bracket finals 7-4 to Mankato West.
Marshall and New Ulm enter Wednesday tied 1-1 with one another over the regular season.
The Eagles took the first game 6-1 on April 22 to hand Marshall its first loss of the season, while the Tigers got their revenge with an 11-9 win on May 12 behind Chase Alcorn going 4 for 4 at the including a seventh-inning triple.
Following Wednesday’s game, the rest of the tournament will be played in New Ulm between Johnson and Mueller Park.
The winner of Wednesday will face the winner of No. 2 Mankato West and No. 7 Jordan on Saturday at 11 a.m., while the loser will drop to the elimination bracket for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday.
