Tiger golf takes 3rd in New Ulm

NEW ULM — Elijah Winn and Luke Ehlers tied for fifth place for the Marshall boys golf team at a Big South Black Division event at New Ulm Country Club on Monday, but depth struggles left the Tigers finishing third at the meet.

The Tigers finished with a team score of 320, trailing St. Peter’s 307 and New Ulm’s 314 in the seven-team, 41-player event.

Winn and Ehlers each shot a 7-over 78 for the Tigers. Winn, an eighth grader, birdied his opening hole and recorded 10 pars. Ehlers, a senior, birdied his first and 13th holes and tallied 10 pars.

St. Peter swept the meet’s top three spots, with Ethan Moreau shooting a 71, Kade Mata shooting a 74 and Owen Matejcek shooting a 74. New Ulm’s Brandt Munson also took fourth with 77 strokes. 

Keegan Fossum and Deacon Wing rounded out the Marshall scorers, each carding an 11-over 82. Wing birdied hole 3 and recorded six pars, while Fossum finished with eight pars.

Jaylen Koster and Ethan Wendorff also competed for the Tigers, tying for 14th with 85 strokes each.

Marshall next competes on Thursday at the St. Cloud Invite at St. Cloud Country Club. The boys invitational will start at 2 p.m. after the girls begin at the same location at 9 a.m.

MARSHALL FINISHES 11TH AT

DACOTAH RIDGE

MORTON — The Marshall boys golf team placed 11th out of 14 teams at the Dacotah Ridge Invitational over the weekend, compiling a two-day score of 639. The Tigers shot a 328 to finish Friday in last place, but their 311 round on Saturday was good for eighth in the field.

Luke Ehlers was the top performer for Marshall in the 84-player event, placing 12th overall. He shot a 4-over 76 on each of the two days, highlighted by a pair of birdies on Saturday to finish at 152 for the tournament.

Edina won the invitational with a team score of 585, led by Torger Ohe’s first-place finish at 142. Edina also had Peter Bennett, Chase Larson and David Colby tie Wayzata’s Tyler Hoppe for third place at 149.

Elk River, led by William Roiland’s individual runner-up finish at 143, was also the team runner-up at 593 while Alexandria Area rounded out the podium at 613.

Deacon Wing tied for 29th in the event with a score of 157. He shot an 82 on Friday but surged up the leaderboard with a 75 on Saturday, good for 13th on the day. He was particularly strong down the final stretch, picking up a pair of birdies and a pair of pars in his final four holes.

Ethan Wendorff and Elijah Winn rounded out the Marshall scorers in 64th and 68th place, respectively. Wendorff shot an 87 on day 1 and a 79 with a pair of birdies on day 2 to finish at 166, while Winn shot an 87 and an 81 to close out his performance at 168.

Jaylen Koster and Keegan Fossum also competed for the Tigers, placing 76th at 171 and 82nd at 184.
