Sting sweep Lakers behind Sneller’s complete games

GRANITE FALLS — Bayli Sneller racked up four hits and tossed a complete game for the Yellow Medicine East softball team in its Thusday afternoon Camden Conference matchup against Lakeview. The Sting scored eight first-inning runs before eventually claiming a 12-4 victory.
Sneller went 4 of 5 at the plate with a double, three singles and an RBI. Alana Almich, Brianna Nelson and Ella Cherveny each also contributed a double and a single, with Almich also driving in a pair of runs and drawing a walk.
In the circle, Sneller struck out 10 batters over seven innings to earn the win. She surrendered three earned and one unearned run on six hits and a trio of walks.
YME’s decisive first inning started with a Nelson double and a Cherveny single. The Sting drew first blood when Sneller singled to center field to score Nelson, and Almich singled to third base to score Cherveny.
Kourtney Peterson reached base on an error to score Sneller, and Emma Keller singled in another run to give the Sting their fourth consecutive at-bat with a run. After Bailey Mortenson singled to put runners on the corners, Charlotte Paslawski reached on an error to score another pair of runs and a two-out single by Nelson and a double by Cherveny each scored another run for an 8-0 Sting lead.
Teagan Fiene was charged with the loss for Lakeview, giving up eight earned and four unearned runs on 13 hits and three walks over five innings. In relief, Avery Hinz threw two scoreless innings with four strikeouts and one hit allowed.
Kiara Hinz led the Lakers at the plate with two hits and two walks.
The Lakers scored in the bottom of the first when Kiara Hinz walked and scored on a Fiene single. Yet, Lakeview scored a run in each of the next two innings to bring their cushion up to nine runs. The Sting and Lakers each scored a pair of runs in the fifth, and Lakeview added one more in the bottom of the sixth when Aubreigh Rausch reached on an error before scoring on a passed ball. Yet, they weren’t able to gather the momentum to put together a comeback.

GRANITE FALLS — A pair of passed balls in the sixth inning allowed the Yellow Medicine East softball team to pick up a come-from-behind win against Lakeview on Thursday in Camden Conference play. The Lakers scored three sixth-inning runs to capitalize on Bayli Sneller’s second complete-game pitching outing of the doubleheader in a 5-3 win.
YME trailed 3-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth when their plate discipline got them to the win. Kourtney Peterson drew a walk with one out and Emma Keller drew the first of three consecutive walks for the Sting to put runners on the corners.
A passed ball allowed Peterson to score the tying run, and Keller scored the go-ahead run on another passed ball after Bailey Mortenson walked. Riley Haar then came in as a pinch hitter and hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Mortenson for a 5-3 lead.
Lakeview had one last chance to force extras in the top of the seventh, but Bayli Sneller retired the side in order to seal her second complete-game victory of the day.
Sneller struck out five batters over seven innings on the hill, giving up three earned runs on seven hits, a walk and a pair of hit batters.
Lakeview scored its first runs of the day with a go-ahead three-run inning in the top of the sixth. Kiara Hinz singled and then scored on a Makenna Anderson single. After Teagan Fiene singled and Aubreigh Rausch was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Mackenzie Herrick lined a two-run single into right field to give the Lakers the lead.
Khya Gawarecki hit another single to load the bases with no outs, but Sneller caught a line drive and threw it to third for a 1-5 double play and induced a pop out to get out of the jam.
Avery Hinz pitched the first four innings for Lakeview, allowing two earned runs on two hits and three walks with nine strikeouts. Taylin Meier allowed another pair of runs over 1 1/3 innings of relief while Anderson was charged with the loss after giving up one earned run with two outs.
Lakeview out-hit the Sting 7-4 in the game, but walked once while YME drew seven walks. Gawarecki and Kiara Hinz each had a pair of singles while Fiene added a single and a walk.
For the Sting, Sneller and Peterson each recorded a single and a walk, Mortenson walked twice and Almich hit a double.
After three scoreless innings, Yellow Medicine East broke the tension in the bottom of the fourth. Bayli Sneller singled and Alana Almich doubled to put two runners in scoring position, and a wild pitch allowed Sneller to score. After another out, Bailey Mortenson hit a sacrifice fly to deep right field to score Almich for a 2-0 Sting lead.
Lakeview (3-5) hosts Minneota/Canby (10-1) today in Cottonwood for a doubleheader at 4:30 p.m.
Yellow Medicine East (4-3) next travels to Madison for a game against Lac qui Parle Valley (6-2) on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
Windom 11, Marshall 1 (5 inn.)
WINDOM — The Marshall softball team suffered an 11-1 loss to Windom Thursday evening on the road in five innings behind an eight-run third inning by the Eagles.
The Tigers were out-hit 9-2, and also recorded six errors to Windom’s three. Marshall’s lone run of the night came in the top of the fifth inning from Claire Kruse off a Bailynn Parsons’ single ground ball to center field. Kruse initially got on base with a walk.
Parsons and Taylor Frana had the Tigers’ two hits on the night.
Alissa Moen pitched the first three innings, and finished with three strikeouts and two walks while allowing four earned runs and six hits.
Sara Dallman came in as relief for the final inning, and finished with one strikeout and three walks with three hits.
Windom held a 10-1 lead, prior to scoring one more run in the bottom of the fifth in its final at-bat, ending the game in mercy-rule.
Marshall (0-9) gets back in action on Saturday when it goes on the road for a doubleheader against Waseca (2-7) at noon.
Wabasso 8, Sleepy Eye 0
WABASSO — Aylah Jenniges tossed a complete-game shutout for the Wabasso softball team in its Tomahawk Conference matchup against Sleepy Eye on Thursday. The Rabbits’ bats struck early as well, helping Wabasso claim an 8-0 victory.
Jenniges struck out four batters over her seven scoreless innings, giving up three hits and a walk on an efficient 83 pitches.
Audrey Johnson gave the Rabbits the game’s first run with a leadoff single in the bottom of the first. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and a steal, and scored on a passed ball.
The Rabbits also added another run in the frame when Jenniges walked and Carlson scored.
Sara Carlson, Macy Rohlik and Jenniges each drove in a pair of runs for the Rabbits on two singles for Carlson, a triple for Rohlik and a single and a walk for Jenniges. Johnson reached base three times for three runs for Wabasso on a single and two walks.
Rohlik’s triple came in the bottom of the fourth, scoring a run after Johnson walked. Rolhlik then also scored when Carlson reached on an error.
Delaina Eis scored for Wabasso in the second when she walked before eventually scoring on a passed ball.
Wabasso tacked on an additional three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Peyton Jenniges walked and Johnson reached on an error to start the inning, and Aylah Jenniges reached on an error to drive in one run. A Rohlik ground out and a Carlson single then drove in another two to make the score 8-0.
Wabasso (8-3) now heads to Winthrop, where it will take on Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (0-6) on Monday at 5 p.m.

MADISON — The hard-hitting offense of Lac qui Parle Valley was too much for the Dawson-Boyd softball team to handle in a Camden Conference battle on Thursday. The Eagles scored a total of five runs in the first two innings and never looked back, defeating Dawson-Boyd 13-1.
Alivia Estling gave the Blackjacks their lone run while trailing 13-0 in the bottom of the fifth. She led off the inning with a double and eventually scored on a pair of wild pitches, but consecutive outs and then a strikeout after a Shay Bothun single ended the frame with the Blackjacks short of the runs needed to extend the game past the mercy rule.
Estling was the lone Blackjack with multiple bases on the day. As a team, Dawson-Boyd finished with four hits and no walks.
Bothun pitched all five innings for Dawson-Boyd, giving up 13 earned runs on 16 hits and three walks.
LQPV scored a first-inning run and then four more in the second. After a one-inning drought, the Eagles tacked on six fourth-inning runs and two more in the fifth for good measure.

MADISON — The Dawson-Boyd softball team couldn’t get its bats going in the second game of its Camden Conference doubleheader against Lac qui Parle Valley on Thursday, falling 16-2.
The Eagles surged ahead with seven second-inning runs and added another six in the third inning before sealing the game with three more in the fourth, including a walk-off two-run home run to seal the doubleheader.
All of the Blackjacks’ offense came in the top of the first. Macy Moen walked and Kadyn Perkins singled to start the frame, and Madalyn Wente hit a two-run triple to cut the deficit to 13-2. Yet, she was stranded on third after a strikeout and ground out ended the frame.
Wente, Perkins and Ritter each singled in the game while Moen drew the team’s lone walk.
Perkins threw the first 2 1/3 innings for the Blackjacks, allowing 13 earned runs on seven hits and seven walks. In relief, Wente gave up three earned runs on two hits and a walk over 1 1/3 frames.
Dawson-Boyd (1-7) remains on the road to take on Renville County West (2-6) on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
