MINNEOTA — The Yellow Medicine East baseball team put together a well-rounded effort at the plate to get a Camden Conference win on the road against Minneota on Tuesday. The Sting got hits from seven different players and had eight of their nine starters reach base in the 10-3 win at K.P. Kompelien Field.

The Sting’s offensive success stemmed from their patience at the plate, YME head coach Nick Richter said, saying that he felt his batters were disciplined and consistently waited for their pitch when they needed to.

Trailing by a run, Yellow Medicine East took the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second. Eric Jimenez reached on an error and Gage Wilke reached on a walk to start the frame and Gavin Torvik was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Lane Wohlman capitalized on the opportunity, lining a two-run single down the left-field line to put the Sting in command.

Gunnar Fagen earned the win on the mound for the Sting, giving up three earned runs on six hits and a walk over six innings with six strikeouts. Braden Nelson pitched a scoreless final inning with a strikeout and a hit allowed.

Fagen’s ability to stymy Minneota’s hitters on Tuesday came from his ability to locate his pitches effectively and his consistency in pounding the strike zone, Richter said.

The Sting tacked on another pair of walks in the fourth when Torvik singled and Hayden Kuehn walked to put runners on first and second. Torvik stole third, and Kuehn ran to second on the throw. The Vikings tried to throw out Kuehn at second after Torvik reached first, but couldn’t hang onto the ball and Torvik ran home for a run. Drew Monson then singled in Kuehn but was tagged out at second trying to stretch the hit into a double.

Brody Larson was charged with the loss for Minneota, surrendering three runs — one unearned — on three hits and three walks. Ryan Meagher gave up two earned and four unearned run on three hits and a walk while getting one out in relief, while Kellen Bradley threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings to close out the game for the Vikings.

Minneota scored the game’s first run when Parker Bradley hit a leadoff single, advanced to third on a hard-hit ball into the outfield from Adam Dalager and scored on a Meagher sacrifice fly. The Vikings’ other two runs came with two outs in the sixth, when Meagher and Eli Gruenes singled and both scored on another single by Larson.

YME put together another rally with a six-run sixth inning. Consecutive singles from Nelson and Fagen started the frame, and a Jimenez single and a Wilke double each drove in a run. A pair of throwing errors by Carson Javers to third allowed Jimenez and Wilke to score, and Torvik reached second base on an error before scoring on a pair of passed balls.

Wohlman continued the rally by singling, stealing second and then advanced to third on an overthrow on the attempt to catch him stealing. Nelson then sent a hard-hit ball into the outfield for an RBI double, bringing the Sting within a run of the mercy rule before a foul out ended the frame.

YME had seven hits from seven batters, including doubles from Fagen, Wilke and Nelson, while Minneota had seven hits from six batters, including a double and a single fro, Gruenes.

Yellow Medicine East improves to 7-3 with the win and goes on the road for its next game against Dawson-Boyd on Thursday at 4:30 pm.

Minneota falls to 9-5 with the loss and next goes on the road to take on MACCRAY on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
