Monson’s third-inning run puts YME past Trojans

Prep baseball roundup, May 1

YME 2,

Ortonville 1

GRANITE FALLS — Offensive production was hard to come by in Thursday’s Camden Conference baseball game between Yellow Medicine East and Ortonville. The two teams combined for six hits on the day, but a second-inning run from Drew Monson put the Sting on top for a 2-1 win.

The game was tied at one run apiece in the bottom of the third when Monson singled and advanced to second when Braden Nelson drew the lone walk of the game for YME. After stealing third, Monsoon scored on a wild pitch for the go-ahead run.

The Stings’ lights-out pitching held off the Trojans from there. Lane Wohlman earned the win after pitching the game’s first four innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits and a walk with four strikeouts. Nelson tossed another pair of scoreless innings for the hold, allowing a walk and a hit, while Gunnar Fagen tossed a scoreless seventh inning with two walks and a strikeout to earn the save.

Fagen reached base on a dropped third strike with two outs in the bottom of the first, and scored on a double by Eric Jimenez. The hit was the game’s lone extra-base hit.

Ortonville got on the board with an error and a wild pitch in the third, but YME reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the frame and never let go of it.

Connor Danielson struck out 13 batters over the full six innings for Ortonville. At the plate, he also accounted for two of the team’s three hits.

YME (6-3) next goes to K.P. Kompelien Field in Minneota (11-4) on Tuesday for a 4:30 p.m. matchup against the Minneota Vikings.

MCC 17,

RTR 2 (5 inn.)

SLAYTON — After a tightly contested first three-and-a-half innings, the Murray County Central baseball team scored 12 fourth-inning runs to claim a 17-2 win in Red Rock Conference play against Russell-Tyler-Ruthton on Thursday.

The Rebels led 5-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth when their bats erupted. Three consecutive singles from Carter Hanson, Teague Meyer and Dugan Kluis resulted in two MCC runs, and Dylan Kluis hit another RBI double to make the score 8-2 before a strikeout resulted in the inning’s first out.

The rally continued, however, as Gabe Tentinger and Carson Lewis walked consecutively, and Cayden Veldhuisen was hit by a pitch, with two runs scoring on wild pitches during the stretch. Lewis scored on another wild pitch, and Tristan Behrends and Hanson walked consecutively before another wild pitch allowed Veldhuisen to score to bring the Rebels’ lead to 10 runs.

Dugan Kluis was hit by another pitch to force in a run and, with two outs, a wild pitch scored Hanson, an error scored Meyer and a hit batter and a wild pitch made the score 17-2.

Dylan Kluis earned the five-inning win on the mound, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks with eight strikeouts. Kluis also had two doubles and a single for a pair of RBIs, while Meyer and Dugan Kluis each drove in another pair of runs.

Meyer doubled and singled and Schneider and Hanson each singled twice and walked once.

MCC first claimed the lead in the second when Behrends reached on a double and Hanson and Meyer followed up with an RBI single and an RBI double.

RTR got a run back in the top of the third, but MCC answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame. The Knights tried to climb back into the game with a run in the top of the fourth but MCC ended it quickly thereafter.

Eli Determan gave up 10 earned runs on 12 hits and a walk over 3 1/3 innings. Sean Griesse also allowed five earned runs on three walks without getting an out and Drew Chandler gave up two earned runs on a pair of walks with one out.

As a team, MCC outhit the Knights 12-5 and drew six walks to MCC’s three.

Griesse drew each of RTR’s three walks while Brayden Chandler and Seth Cowell each hit a double.

Dawson-Boyd 6,

Canby 1

CANBY — A pair of three-run innings put the Canby baseball team past the Canby Lancers in a Camden Conference matchup on Thursday. The Blackjacks capitalized on four total bases from Nathan Hansen to claim a 6-1 win, marking their sixth consecutive win.

Dawson-Boyd first took the lead in the top of the first. With two outs and no runners on, Tygan Long walked and Hansen doubled to put the two in scoring position. Grayson Olson then reached on an error to score both runners and Beau Johnson reached on another to make the score 3-0.

Hansen earned the win on the mound for Dawson-Boyd, striking out nine batters over 5 2/3 innings. He gave up one earned run on seven hits and four walks before being relieved by Kameron Sather, who pitched a scoreless final 1 1/3 innings.

In addition to Hansen’s pair of doubles, Long also reached base twice on a single and a walk while Aedyn Dahl logged a pair of walks.

Eli Greenman gave up two earned and four unearned runs on five hits and a trio of walks in his 4 2/3-inning start. In relief, Jace Rangaard shut Dawson-Boyd out for the final 2 1/3 frames.

The Blackjacks rallied again in the fifth when Long singled before scoring on a Hansen double. Olson then singled in Hansen and, after Dawson-Boyd loaded the bases, Dahl drew a bases-loaded walk to force in another run.

Jace Sigler and Greenman each reached base twice for Canby with a single and a walk. In total, Canby had seven hits — all singles — and five walks to Dawson-Boyd’s five hits and four walks.

The Lancers broke up Hansen’s shut-out bid in the bottom of the sixth. Morgen Tol walked and Will Abrahamson singled to start the inning before Hansen retired the next two batters. Dyllon Christianson walked to load the bases, prompting a Dawson-Boyd pitching change, and Greenman drew another walk to force in another run before a pop out ended the frame.

Dawson-Boyd (7-2) opens a six-game homestand on Tuesday when it hosts Renville County West (0-8) at 4:30 p.m.

Canby (2-4-) goes on the road on Saturday for a matchup at Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian (5-3) at 10 a.m.
