Meyer’s 4 hits lead MCC past Knights
Prep baseball roundup May 6, 2025
TYLER — While the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton baseball team put up a fight in its Red Rock Conference rematch against Murray County Central on Thursday, Teague Meyer’s four hits helped the Rebels hold off the Knights for a 9-7 win.
The victory is the Rebels’ second this year against RTR, with the first coming by a score of 17-2 on May 1.
It took MCC just two at-bats to claim the go-ahead run, with Meyer hitting a leadoff single, advancing to second on a wild pitch and scoring on a Dugan Kluis single. Another single from Krew Schneider put runners on the corners, a passed ball allowed Kluis to score and Gabe Tentinger hit an RBI single to score Schneider. Tentinger also went on to score on an error and a passed ball.
Dylan Kluis earned the win on the mound for MCC, giving up two earned and two unearned runs on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings. He struck out 10 batters while walking three.
In addition to four hits from Meyer, MCC’s offense was headed by another three hits from Tentinger and two apiece from Dylan and Dugan Kluis.
RTR also had its fair share of activity at the plate. Gavin Schreurs was a home run away from the cycle, logging a single, a double and a triple with three RBIs, while Eli Determan and Tyler Wichmann each also contributed three singles.
Trailing 9-4 in the final frame, the Knights put together a furious rally to nearly force extras. Wichmann and Chase Christianson hit consecutive singles before Schreurs hit a two-run triple. Gabe Elton reached on an error to drive in another run, bringing the tying run to the plate, but a strikeout and a line out left RTR two runs shy of the tie.
Wichmann pitched four innings for RTR, giving up seven earned and two unearned runs on 12 hits and a walk. He struck out seven batters.
In relief, Schreurs tossed three scoreless innings with three strikeouts, a hit and a walk.
A Dylan Kluis a double, a Schneider walk and a Tentinger single loaded the bases with no outs for MCC in the top of the third when Carter Lewis hit a two-run single. Yet, the rally came to a halt with two strikeouts and a pop out.
RTR first got on the board when Seth Cowell singled, Tyler Wichmann walked and a wild pitch scored Cowell and a Schreurs double scored Wichmann in the bottom of the second.
Dylan Kluis hit an RBI single, Schneider hit a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch allowed another Rebel to score for a three-run fourth inning.
The Knights scored one run in each of the third and fourth innings.
MCC improves to 11-1 on the season and next travels to Lamberton for a game against Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
St. Peter 3,
Marshall 2 (8 inn.)
ST. PETER — Despite holding St. Peter to one run over the first six innings of a Big South matchup on Tuesday, the Marshall baseball team couldn’t pick up a win due to some clutch hitting from the Saints. The Tigers held a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the final frame, but St. Peter came up with an extra-inning-forcing run before walking off Marshall 3-2 in the eighth.
Alex Korir led off the Saints’ eighth-inning at-bats with a single and advanced to second on a Levi Wachal sacrifice bunt. The Tigers intentionally walked Lathe Bly to bring a force out into play, but another walk to Ashton Guida loaded the bases and Maxwell Hollerich drove in Korir for the game-winning run.
Eli Alcorn pitched six innings with a no-decision in his start for Marshall. He struck out six batters, limiting St. Peter to one unearned run on two hits and four walks. In relief, Cooper Mensink gave up a pair of earned runs on two hits and three walks over 1 1/3 innings.
The Saints’ tying run came with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Jared Herrley drew a walk and advanced to second on a ground out before scoring on an Owen Potts single, knotting up the score at 2-2.
Marshall first claimed the lead in the top of the first when Andrew Stelter singled, advanced to second on a Samuel Thor sacrifice bunt, got to third when Liam Kruse reached on an error and scored on a Josh Kraft ground out.
St. Peter tied up the game at one run apiece in the bottom of the second when Potts reached on an error to score Guida. Yet, the Tigers reclaimed their lead in the fifth when Mensink hit a two-out single before scoring on a Stelter triple to right field.
Stelter and Mensink each had a pair of hits for Marshall, including a triple for Stelter. Thor also hit a double for Marshall’s lone other base hit. The Tigers drew one walk in the game.
Marshall falls to 11-2 with the loss, ending their five-game win streak. The Tigers will look to return to form when they host Tri-City United for a doubleheader Thursday at 4 p.m.
