NORTH MANKATO — A late-game rally wasn’t enough to give Marshall its first win of the season in an elimination-bracket matchup against Worthington on Thursday in the 2AAA tournament at Caswell Park. The seventh-seeded Tigers lost their postseason opener against Mankato West 17-0 in four innings and dropped 12-1 in nine innings to No. 6 Worthington to end their season.
Marshall finishes the year at 0-21 and graduates a pair of seniors in Naya Grahn and Justine Kirst.
FIRST ROUND (4 inn.)
Mankato West 17,
Marshall 0
The Tigers gave up 10 first-inning runs on eight hits, a pair of walks and a trio of errors. Among the hits was a three-run home run by Lydia Banse, capping off the inning’s scoring at 10-0. Marshall was never able to climb its way back into the game.
Bailynn Parsons and Sara Dallman each singled, accounting for the lone Marshall hits of the game. Mankato West finished with a 14-2 advantage in hits in the game, and a 5-0 edge in extra-base hits.
Dallman threw the first 2 1/3 innings for Marshall, surrendering 10 earned and seven unearned runs on 12 hits and four walks with four strikeouts. Alissa Moen threw the final pair of outs, giving up two hits with no runs or walks allowed.
The Scarlets added another unearned run in the second, and sealed the four-inning mercy rule with six hits and a pair of walks for six runs in the third inning.
Banse led Mankato West a triple shy of the cycle, logging a home run, a double and a single for five RBIs. Maria Hagen also had a double and two singles for a pair of RBIs.
Norah Davis pitched all four scoreless innings for Mankato West, striking out a pair of batters without giving up a walk.
ELIMINATION ROUND
Worthington 12,
Marshall 11 (9 inn.)
Marshall faced an 10-8 deficit heading into the top of the seventh when they strung together some clutch hits. Sara Dallman doubled before scoring when Taylor Frana reached on an error with one out, and a pair of singles from Kirst and Jaylah Morgan scored Frana to tie the game at 10-10.
Both teams went scoreless in the first round of extra innings, but Frana reached base on an error, advanced to third on a Kirst sacrifice bunt and a Kinsley Bicker single, and scored a go-ahead run when Morgan reached on an error to give Marshall an 11-10 edge.
Yet, the Tigers’ hopes for a win were short-lived. A single and two walks loaded the bases, anda passed ball gave the Trojans the tying run. A fielder’s choice put one away, but a ground ball drove in the game-winning run to walk off the Tigers.
Dallman finished the game with four hits — including a pair of doubles — and two RBIs to lead the Tigers at the plate. Kirst also shined in her final game for Marshall, driving in two runs on a triple and a single, while Morgan and Bailynn Parsons each singled twice.
Dallman also pitched 5 1/3 innings of relief for Marshall. While she held Worthington scoreless for her first four innings in the circle, the pair of runs in the ninth left her with the loss. She struck out four batters while allowing two hits and five walks in the outing.
Alissa Moen threw the first three innings for the Tigers, giving up nine earned runs on 13 hits with four strikeouts.
Dallman hit a two-run single in the top of the third to give Marshall the game’s first offensive production, but Worthington responded with six runs in the bottom of the frame and four more in the fourth to take a commanding 10-2 lead.
Yet, Marshall’s defense and pitching locked in from there to hold the Trojans scoreless for the rest of regulation and give the offense a chance to make it a competitive game.
The Tigers got back within striking distance with six runs in the fifth inning. Claire Kruse, Parsons and Dallman singled to load the bases with two outs. An RBI single from Moen, a passed ball, and another RBI single from Frana made the score 10-5, and Kirst tripled in another pair of runs before scoring when Hayley Kirchner reached on an error to bring Marshall within two runs of Worthington.
