MINNEOTA — Madison Hennen’s 19 strikeouts over 10 innings on the mound weren’t enough for the Minneota/Canby softball team to pull out a win over Lac qui Parle Valley on Tuesday. The Vikings held a two-run lead heading into the final frame, but the Eagles rallied to force extra innings before defeating the Vikings 6-5 in 10 innings.
Hennen threw 146 pitches on the day, giving up three earned runs on 12 hits. She walked just three of the 41 batters she faced.
LQPV took the lead in the top of the 10th when Kendyl Shelstad and Brandi Meyer singled consecutively before Kayla Jahn bunted in the go-ahead run. Another sacrifice bunt and a runner caught stealing prevented any further damage, but the Eagles retired three of the four Vikings faced in the bottom of the frame to end the game.
McKenzie Bednarek led the Vikings at the plate in the game with two RBIs on a triple and two singles, while Kiersyn Hulzebos also singled three times and drew a walk. Emily Walker had a double and a walk for two RBIs while Courtney Antony singled twice and drew a walk.
LQPV surged ahead in the top of the first on a two-run single from Caleigh Conn and another RBI single from Zoey Dockter. Yet, Minneota/Canby responded in the bottom of the frame.
Gretta Buysse and Hulzebos singled consecutively to start the inning and a two-run double from Walker put Minneota/Canby on the board. Hennen then hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Walker for the tying run.
Maya Sawatzky pitched all 10 innings for LQPV, striking out 10 batters while giving up four earned runs on 15 hits and three walks.
Minneota/Canby held a 5-3 lead heading into the top of the seventh, but a walk to Aidyn Bonn and a single by Shelstad put the tying run on first with two outs. Meyer then hit a single into left field and a Minneota/Canby error allowed the tying run to score.
Bednarek first gave the Vikings the lead when Bednarek hit an RBI triple to score Antony in the fourth. Two innings later, Antony walked, stole her way to third and scored on another Bednarek hit, this time a single.
Minneota/Canby falls to 16-3 with the loss and next hosts Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg (5-6) for its regular-season finale on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
