Baartman hits HR, 2B in RTR’s 16-0 win over DB

TYLER — Laken Baartman hit a home run, a double, and a single in three at-bats for the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton softball team on Friday as the Knights dropped Dawson-Boyd 16-0 in four innings to close out their regular season.
Jaida Fricke and Paisley Thooft also contributed three RBIs each for the Knights, with Fricke hitting a double and three singles and Thooft singling three times.
Baartman led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run on the second pitch she saw and Fricke doubled, stole third and scored on a Thooft ground out to give the Knights a 2-0 lead after one. They never looked back.
Fricke pitched all four shutout innings for the Knights, limiting Dawson-Boyd to one hit with no walks and striking out four batters.
Baartman hit an RBI double before scoring on a Fricke single in the second to double RTR’s lead, and Payton Johansen was hit by a pitch and Morgan Appel was walked with the bases loaded to drive in another pair of runs for a 6-0 RTR lead.
RTR tacked on another 10 runs in the fourth, coming on seven hits, four walks and a pair of Dawson-Boyd errors, to bring the four-inning mercy rule into play.
Kadyn Perkins pitched the first 2 1/3 innings for Dawson-Boyd, giving up 11 earned and one unearned runs on nine hits and six walks with five strikeouts, while Shay Bothun got the final two outs for the Blackjacks after giving up two earned runs on three hits and a pair of walks.
Rylin Viessman singled for the lone Dawson-Boyd hit.
Russell-Tyler-Ruthton finishes its regular season at 7-13 while Dawson-Boyd wraps up at 2-12. The Knights enter the Section 3A tournament as the No. 8 seed and will face No. 1 Wabasso in the first round of the South bracket on Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Wabasso, while Dawson-Boyd enters as the North bracket’s No. 8 seed and will take on top-seeded Lac qui Parle Valley in Madison on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
GAME 1
SESM 8, Wabasso 3
WABASSO — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s claimed the first game of its Tomahawk Conference softball doubleheader against Wabasso on Friday, jumping ahead with a three-run third inning and coasting to an 8-3 win.
The game was tied at one run apiece through two innings when a Wabasso error, a double and two singles gave Sleepy Eye St. Marys’ three runs to take the lead.
The Rabbits responded with Macy Rohlik singling before scoring on a Sara Carlson single, and Carlson scoring on a Camryn Irlbeck single to cut the deficit to 4-3. Yet, that was the last offensive production Wabasso got on the day while SESM scored one more run in the fourth and sixth innings and two in the fifth to pull away.
Aylah Jenniges pitched seven innings for the Rabbits, giving up three earned and five unearned runs on nine hits and a walk with five strikeouts.
Carlson tallied two hits, Kayleigha Johnson doubled for the team’s lone extra-base hit while also drawing a walk, and Irlbeck hit a single and drew a walk.
GAME 2
Wabasso 4, SESM 0
WABASSO — The Wabasso softball team ended its regular season on a high note on Friday, claiming the second game of its doubleheader 4-0 behind some stellar pitching from Aylah Jenniges.
Jenniges threw a complete-game shutout for the Rabbits, giving up one hit and one walk while striking out seven batters. She also drew a walk at the plate.
Audrey Johnson scored the Rabbits’ go-ahead run when she drew a leadoff walk and scored on a Sara Carlson single with two outs. Wabasso then added another run in the second when Alivia Olson reached on an error and scored on a Peyton Jenniges double.
Peyton Jenniges led the Rabbits with two hits and a walk in the game, tallying three RBIs.
Camryn Irlbeck and Olson reached on consecutive errors to start the fourth inning and both scored on a Jenniges single to make the score 4-0.
Wabasso finishes its regular season at 14-6 and enters the Section 3A tournament as the South bracket’s top-seed, taking on No. 8 Russell-TylerRuthton on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
