Alcorns lead Tiger bats in win vs. New Ulm

NEW ULM — Chase and Eli Alcorn led the Marshall baseball team’s productive bats in a slugfest against New Ulm on Monday. The Tigers outhit New Ulm 12-10 on the day and held off a late Eagle rally for an 11-9 Big South Conference win.

Chase Alcorn notched a game-high four hits with a triple and three singles, while Eli tripled twice. The two each drove in two RBIs, tying Liam Kruse for second on the team to Cooper Mensink’s three.

Marshall took the lead when Shep Jensen, Josh Kraft and Chase Alcorn each singled in the first. While Kraft was out at third when Alcorn scored Jensen, a pair of walks to Eli Alcorn and Kruse loaded the bases and a third to Braxton Koster pushed across a run.Marshall retained its lead for the remainder of the game.

Owen Kesteloot pitched the game’s first 5 2/3 innings to earn the win, giving up three earned and two unearned runs on six hits and six walks with four strikeouts. Prior to Monday, Kesteloot hadn’t allowed an earned run over 20 1/3 innings on the season and had thrown two consecutive complete-game shutouts.

The Tigers added some more cushion in the third when Eli Alcorn tripled to score Chase Alcorn, Kruse singled in Eli and Mensink hit a sacrifice fly to score Kruse. Yet, New Ulm remained competitive by capitalizing on a pair of Marshall errors with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the frame.

The bats went quiet in the fourth and fifth innings before both teams’ offense roared back into the picture in the sixth.

Chase Alcorn and Liam Kruse reached on a single and an Error, and an RBI single from JR Vierstraete with two outs and a two-run triple from Mensink gave the Tigers a six-run cushion. In the bottom of the frame, New Ulm hit four consecutive RBI singles with two outs to get back within striking distance.

The Tigers gave themselves some breathing room when Chase Alcorn hit an RBI triple and scored on an Eli Alcorn triple in the top of the seventh. Kruse followed up with a sacrifice fly to bring Marshall’s advantage to 11-6.

New Ulm got a single and three consecutive walks to start the bottom of the seventh and force in a run. Another hit batter and a sacrifice fly brought the tying run to the plate, but a fly out and a strikeout ended the game.

Leyton Wherry recorded the save for Marshall, throwing one inning without giving up a hit or a walk.

Logan Miller gave up one run while getting one out on the mound while Eli Alcorn gave up three earned runs on three walks and a hit without getting an out.

Marshall improves to 14-3 with the win and goes on the road to play Mankato West on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Dawson-Boyd 10,

Ortonville 0 (5 inn.)

DAWSON — Eli Olson pitched a no-hitter as the Dawson-Boyd baseball team cruised to a 10-0 mercy-rule victory over Ortonville Monday evening. The win marks 10 straight, with the last four in a row being a shutout.

Olson threw for six strikeouts and three walks in his five innings on the mound.

The Blackjacks tallied eight hits and no errors, to the Trojans’ four errors.

Collin Olson, Grayson Olson and Tygan Long all had doubles on the night, and Kameron Sather had a team-high three stolen bases.

Long also brought in five runs off his two hits.

Dawson-Boyd scored four runs in both the third and fourth innings, along with one each in the first and second.

To pressure Ortonville prior to taking its final at-bat, Grayson hit a double off a fly ball to left field in the bottom of the fourth inning to score both Long and Nathan Hansen for the Blackjacks’ 10-run lead.

With the Trojans looking to score at least one run to prevent the night from ending early in the top of the fifth, Dawson-Boyd promptly got all three outs with two a force at first and second, and a strikeout.

Along with Long, Hansen also had two hits, while Sather accounted for a team-high three runs.

Ortonville went through three pitchers, all throwing one strikeout.

Dawson-Boyd (11-2) remains at home and will host MACCRAY today at 4:30 p.m.

CMC 10, Lakeview 0 (6 inn.)

PRINSBURG — The Lakeview baseball team stayed within reach of Central Minnesota Christian for a majority of the game, trailing by four, up until the Bluejays racked up some more runs in the fifth and sixth innings to end the game in mercy rule.

Lakeview recorded just one hit on the night, coming from Teagan Neuman. The Lakers also committed three errors.

CMC finished with six hits and one error, and started the game with three unanswered runs in the first inning.

Kyler Post pitched another good game for Lakeview, throwing seven strikeouts and two walks with three earned runs in his 4 2/3 innings pitched.

Braylon Breyfogle took to the mound for the final inning, pitching two strikeouts and two walks with one earned run.

Riley Broberg sealed the win for the Bluejays in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run RBI with two outs off a hard ground ball to right field.

Lakeview (0-12) will next return to the field at home when it hosts Ortonville on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Minneota 3, Wabasso 0

WABASSO — Adam Dalager and Kellen Bradley threw a combined shutout for the Minneota baseball team in its Camden Conference baseball game against Wabasso on Monday, leading the Vikings to a 3-0 win over the Rabbits.

Dalager tossed the first 5 2/3 innings, striking out two batters while giving up three walks and a pair of hits. Bradley closed out the save with 1 1/3 shutout innings, limiting the Rabbits to a hit and a walk.

Parker Bradley scored the go-ahead run for Minneota in the third inning. He was hit by a pitch, stole second, advanced to third on an error and scored on a Dalager single.

The Vikings increased their lead in the sixth when a Carson Javers single and a Brody Larson double put two runners on with one out. Kyson Arndt singled in Javers and Larson scored on a passed ball to make the score 3-0.

Drew Kemp pitched six innings for Wabasso, surrendering three earned runs on nine hits with six strikeouts and a walk. Cason Olson also pitched a shutout inning of relief with three strikeouts while giving up a hit and a walk.

Dalager and Javers each singled twice for the Vikings while Harms singled twice and stole a base for Wabasso.

Minneota improves to 11-5 with the win and next host Tracy-Milroy-Balaton today at 4:30 p.m.

Wabasso falls to 4-12 and hosts MACCRAY for its next game on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

SATURDAY’S GAMES

Mankato East 6, Marshall 1

MANKATO — Five fielding errors by the Marshall baseball team sealed its fate in a game against Mankato East on Saturday. The Tigers kept pace with the Cougars at the plate, each team notching 10 hits, but Mankato East scored five unearned runs while playing clean defense to down Marshall 6-1.

The game was tied at one run apiece when a single, a Marshall error, and a two-run triple with two outs gave Mankato East a 3-1 lead. The Cougars scored another run in the fifth and two more on a Marshall error in the sixth to bring the game to its final score.

Samuel Thor scored Marshall’s lone run in the top of the third. He hit a leadoff single, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a Chase Alcorn double to knot the game up at one run apiece.

Liam Kruse pitched the first five innings for Marshall, giving up one earned and three unearned runs on nine hits and a walk. Cooper Mensink pitched the final frame for the Tigers, giving up a pair of unearned runs on one hit and two walks.

Thor led the Marshall offense with three singles while Alcorn contributed a double and a single and Mensink singled twice.

RTR 13, Lakeview 3 (5 Inn.)

COTTONWOOD — Seth Cowell, Sean Griesse and Tyler Wichmann each hit home runs for the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton baseball team on Saturday as the Knights stormed past the Lakeview Lakers for a 13-3 non-conference win in five innings.

Cowell had the first of the Knights’ long balls, hitting a two-run blast to left field to tie the game up at two runs apiece in the top of the second. Chase Christianson and Brooks Hess singled and Brayden Chandler was hit by a pitch with two outs. A passed ball scored Christianson and Wichmann then sent a shot over the right-field wall for a three-run homer and a 6-2 RTR lead.

Cowell led off the fifth with a double before scoring on a Christianson double, and Griesse hit a ball deep into center field for a two-run inside-the-park homer and an 11-2 RTR advantage. A Wichmann double and an Eli Determan triple also give RTR another pair of runs in the frame.

Determan logged a game-high three hits, all triples, for three RBIs. Wichmann, Cowell, and Griesse each also had a home run and a double, including four RBIs for Wichmann, while Christianson logged a double and a single.

Drew Chandler earned the win on the mound for the Knights, going the full five innings without allowing an earned run. He struck out five batters while giving up eight hits and a walk.

Lakeview plated a pair of runs in the first when Teagan Neuman reached on an error and scored on a Kyler Post double, and Post scored on a Logan Herrick double. Yet, RTR held the Lakers without a run from there until Braylon Breyfogle singled and scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the fifth.

Herrick logged three hits with a double for Lakeview while Landyn Listul singled twice in the game.

Neuman pitched the first 3 1/3 innings for Lakeview, allowing two earned and six unearned runs on seven hits and a pair of walks. In relief, Breyfogle surrendered five earned runs on eight hits over 1 2/3.

RTR improves to 15-5 with the win and hosts Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian (9-4) today at 4:30 p.m. in Ruthton.

YME 7, MACCRAY 3

GRANITE FALLS — A trio of first-inning runs gave the Yellow Medicine East baseball team all the offense it needed in its Camden Conference matchup against MACCRAY on Saturday. The Sting surged ahead early and their defense staved off the Wolverines from there for a 7-3 win.

Drew Monson and Braden Nelson singled consecutively before Gunnar Fagen was hit by a pitch to load the bases in YME’s first three at-bats. After a strikeout put one away, Gage Wilke hit an RBI single and Jacob Peterson drove in another pair of runs on a double to give YME a 3-0 lead.

MACCRAY answered with a run in the second, but a Gavin Torvik sacrifice fly and a Lane Wohlman RBI single gave the Sting a 5-1 cushion that it never relinquished.

Nelson led YME with three hits in the game while Wohlman singled twice and drew a walk.

Fagen earned the win on the mound, limiting MACCRAY to one earned run on four hits and four walks over five innings. Nelson closed out the game, giving up one earned run on a hit and a walk over two innings.

MACCRAY scored a run in the top of the sixth but YME continued to bolster its lead with a Monson sacrifice fly and a Fagen RBI single.

YME improves to 8-4 on the year and hosts Canby (3-6) for its next game today at 4:30 p.m.
