COTTONWOOD — Grayson Olson hit a two-run home run to help the Dawson-Boyd baseball team explode for a nine-run fifth inning in a 13-0 mercy-rule win over Lakeview in a Camden Conference game Friday night. The victory marks three straight for the Blackjacks, while the Lakers continue to search for their first win of the season.

“We’re clicking, and that’s what we want … They put so much pressure on themselves, and it’s fun to see that we have fun playing the game,” Dawson-Boyd head coach Daren Swenson said. “We started out strong like we have been and jumped on it right away … We ran the bases well, we hit the ball very well today. It was a good game.”

Dawson-Boyd’s strong hitting and base running served them well from the jump, along with a shutout performance from Kameron Sather on the mound to hold Lakeview from getting any momentum going. The Blackjacks stole 14 bases.

“We’re quick players. We want to be aggressive on the base path, because being aggressive gets runs,” Swenson said. “That’s been picking up more and more each game.”

Lakeview finished the night with two hits and six errors, to Dawson-Boyd’s 11 hits and one error.

Jace Danielson pitched four innings for Lakeview, throwing four strikeouts and two walks while allowing eight hits and seven earned runs. Teagan Nueman came in as a relief in the final inning, throwing one strikeout and one walk with three hits and five runs.

“We got an excellent effort from our starting pitcher,” Lakeview head coach Curt Schake said. “He got the start tonight by default because we are low in pitching, and it was a pleasant surprise.”

Sather threw nine strikeouts and no walks for Dawson-Boyd, which Swenson said was his first time as a starting pitcher and was happy with his performance, along with the team’s defense behind him.

Logan Herrick and Danielson recorded the two hits for Lakeview.

Olson also led Dawson-Boyd with three hits and three RBIs, while Tygan Long had a team-high three runs also with a trio of RBIs. Beau Johnson and Nathan Hansen each had a pair of hits on the night as well.

The Blackjacks had a 4-0 lead heading into the top of the fifth inning, and brought in the nine runs off five singles and two doubles, along with Olson’s home run. The Blackjacks went through their entire batting lineup and had bases loaded on two occasions.

Collin Olson hit a double deep to left field, scoring both Grayson and Johnson who initially got on base with a single and a walk, respectively.

Schake made the pitching change to Nueman with no outs after the two runs, and said Dawson-Boyd was starting to time Danielson’s pitches and wanted to put in a different speed.

With bases loaded, Sather hit a double to right field to run in Collin and Ashton Swendra to put Dawson-Boyd up 8-0. Swendra first got on base with a grounder out to left field, eventually stealing second base.

The Blackjacks kept the bases occupied when Long hit an RBI double, also to left field, as Elijah Olson, Sather and Colten Bothun also sprinted to home plate for an 11-0 advantage.

Grayson took his second pitch to hit a line drive over the left field fence with Long on base for his first home run of the season, and gave Dawson-Boyd its final 13-0 score.

“There’s been a couple games already where he’s [Grayson] been close, and that was a nice shot,” Swenson said. “It’s a confidence builder for him and for the teammates, because they see it and they enjoy that.”

Lakeview was able to complete the outs with a pair of pop fly catches and a strikeout, however couldn’t come up with the hits in the bottom of the fifth to end the game early.

“Even when we got down, the guys’ attitudes stayed up. We didn’t defeat ourselves, they [Dawson-Boyd] beat us,” Schake said. “They hit the ball really hard, and you’ve got to hand it to them, Dawson is a good ball club. That’s always, to me, better than beating yourself.”

Dawson-Boyd first got on the board in the first inning with Long scoring from third base off a Grayson single, and scored three runs off one hit in the third inning to grab an early lead.

Bothun and Long got on base in the top of the third off a single and a walk, and Hansen brought the two in off a single infield ground ball to shortstop. Bothun scored on the throw to first base, which passed the first baseman, while Long took advantage of the throwing error.

“Keeping base runners at bay, it’s a pitcher’s job, it’s a catcher’s job and it’s your fielder’s job. It’s all three we have to work on in practice of how we can slow that down,” Schake said. “We can’t let a single be a double, or a double be a triple every time.”

Hansen then was able to reach home off of a double from Johnson to left field before the Lakers could finish the inning.

Lakeview (0-6) will look to earn a win when it hits the road to K.P. Kompelien Field to take on Minneota on Tuesday with a 4:30 p.m. first pitch.

Dawson-Boyd (4-2) will next look for its fourth straight when it returns home to face Benson on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

“We just take each game on its own and work to the next one,” Swenson said. “Then once we get to the playoffs, we deal with another season.”
