COTTONWOOD -- The Lakeview track and field team returns a group of state participants while welcoming a large group of new athletes in hopes to have another successful 2025 outdoor season.
"Our motto is, 'Happy, healthy, fast, far and high.' We got to first treat them, make sure they’re happy and healthy throughout the season," Lakeview track and field head coach Matt Konrad said. "Expectation is just to have some fun, work hard and take care of our bodies along the way."
The Lakers have three returning seniors in Megan Schwartz, Cole Remiger and Blake Louwagie, with the addition of one new senior in Dylan Caron, who will be splitting time between baseball and the track team.
"She [Schwartz] did a really good job for us last year in the high jump and in some of the other field events," Konrad said. "Remiger, he’s a big leader on our team, he is our top distance runner ... Louwagie last year, he dabbled in the throwing department. This year, he’s been kind of transitioning to be a hurdler for us, really finding his way to help the team out the best that he can. He’s doing a good job."
Lakeview has a handful of returning state participants from last year's tournament.
Jackson Staab placed sixth out of 23 in the shot put event in the state preliminaries, earning a medal.
Marisa Jacoby tied for 14th in the pole vault state championship, while Brook Gunlogson was also a state qualifier after finishing 11th and 19th in the preliminary 100- and 200-meter dash.
The Lakers also return two wheelchair athletes that competed in state last year, Terrek Jenniges and Broden Stensrud.
The duo shared second place in the wheelchair discus throw, and Jenniges also took second in both the 100- and 200-meter dash.
"Excited to see those people come back again, participate and hit some new personal records and do some fun things," Konrad said.
In Lakeview's start to this season, Konrad said everyone has been competing well and looks forward to seeing how the season develops.
"I think if there’s any kids that are, I can’t really think of a ton of kids that haven’t hit a good mark yet," Konrad said. "They really are, I think, giving me their best again every single day. I have zero disappointments at all. I think they’re all doing such a good job, working hard each day, giving me their best. They’re just really buying and listening. It’s just a fun group we work with."
Konrad also noted the growth the program is seeing this year, and how he is working to get the athletes involved in several events to find comfortability and success.
"I’m really excited for all my newcomers this year. Our team has definitely grown a lot," Konrad said. "I think they’re very confident kids. They’re very willing to learn, and willing to work hard ... Depth is helpful."
Lakeview will be the home-site for this year's Section 3A true team championship, which is slated for May 5 with field events beginning at 2:30 and running events at 4 p.m.
