MARSHALL — Lindsey Lund, Kylar Hjelmeland and Alyssa Swedzinski swept the top three spots of the Marshall Girls Golf Invitational on Tuesday afternoon, leading the Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks to a runaway first-place finish at the event.

It was a career day for Hjelmeland, with the freshman breaking 80 for the first time with a  7-over 79 to finish as the meet runner-up. She went 4-over on her first three holes, but settled down from there with three birdies and seven pars to go 3-over on the final 15 holes.

Lund won the meet as an individual with a 5-over 77. The Dawson-Boyd senior was particularly strong on the front 9, where she shot 1-over with a birdie and six pars. She also notched a birdie with four pars on the back 9.

“I think just composure, being able to put things away, and making those par putts,” Lund said when asked about what she felt was going well for her on the course. “I think there were a lot of puts, like four feet, that I needed to make and did when I needed to.”

The Blackjacks finished with a team score of 328, putting them 63 strokes ahead of the hosting runners-up, the Marshall Tigers. Murray County Central also placed third at 399, Russell-Tyler-Ruthton took fifth with 417 strokes while Marshall’s B-team and Lakeview took seventh and eighth with 440 and 443 strokes, respectively.

Swedzinski rounded out Dawson-Boyd’s podium sweep with a 10-over 82, highlighted by a birdie to finish off the day on hole 1. Freshman Claire Stratmoen also gave Dawson-Boyd four of the top five individuals with an 18-over 90 to place fifth.

The Blackjacks have gotten off to a hot start again after finishing as Class A co-champions with Fillmore Central last year. The Blackjacks opened their 2025 campaign at the Willmar Early Season Girls Invite, finishing as the runner-up to Class 3A Alexandria and being the only Class A team in the top 6. Lund placed third in that tournament while Hjelmeland tied for fourth.

“It’s nice to know that we have a backbone and everyone can shoot those scores,” Lund said of the team’s depth. “Kylar was phenomenal these last two tournaments, we can’t ask much more out of her. I think it’s just fun to be able to go out and compete.”

Marshall’s Dayton Webskowski was the lone non-Blackjack in the top 5, placing fourth at 15-over 87. Webskowski cited her putting as a key factor in her round. Grace Rokeh also placed 10th for Marshall in the 47-golfer event with a 24-over 96.

Marshall’s team score marked a step back from their 366 that they shot in their season debut on a windy day at Marshall Golf Club on Saturday.

“They know they can play better, they know that they gave up a lot of shots out there, but now they kind of know what to get back to in practice,” Marshall head coach Eric Novosad said. “The biggest thing was trying to get off the tee box, that was one of the areas that we didn’t capitalize on enough. We were kind of left and right, and then had to punch out, that was kind of a big issue for us.”

In terms of positives, the team’s putting has continued to improve and become more consistent, Novosad said, adding that the team is going to look to continue that trend and be methodical about growing in that area of the game.

Ali Pederson, the Tigers’ lone senior, was Marshall’s No. 3 scorer, tying Lakeview’s Lauren Boe for 15th place with a score of 100 on the day. Maddi Panka rounded out the Marshall scorers, tying Russell-Tyler-Ruthton’s Izzy Thomas and MCC’s Natalie Einck for 21st at 108.

Rachael Huso led MCC in ninth place with a score of 92, followed closely by Ava Johnson in 12th at 97. Einck and Elysia Korver rounded out the Rebel scorers, with Korver placing 26th at 110.

RTR senior Jenna Gossen led the Knights, tying Canby freshman Maddison Richter for seventh place with 91 strokes.

Marshall Golf Club will next host Minneota, RTR, Tracy-Milroy-Balaton, Lakeview, Canby and Yellow medicine East for a boys invite today at noon. The Marshall girls golf team will compete again on Thursday at Redwood Valley at 1 p.m. while the Class A girls teams will compete again at the Camden Conference South Division meet at Cottonwood Country Club on Thursday at 9:30 a.m.

Starting at $4.38/week.
