No. 5 Orono hands Tigers first loss of season, 59-56

DELANO — The top-ranked Marshall girls basketball team’s hopes of an undefeated season came to an end on Saturday afternoon when the Tigers suffered their first loss of the season against No. 5 Delano. The Tigers outscored the Spartans in the second half, but Orono’s 5-point edge at halftime was enough for the Spartans to hold on for a 59-56 win.

Taleigha Bigler carried the bulk of the scoring load for Marshall, finishing with a game-high 22 points on 7 of 16 shooting from the field and 7 of 10 shooting from the free-throw line. Reese Drake and Avery Fahl also contributed 13 points on 12 shots and 10 points on 11 shots respectively.

As a team, Marshall shot 35% from the field and 6 of 23 (26%) from 3-point range. Orono, meanwhile, shot 47% from the field and 6 of 20 (30%) from 3-point range.

Mya Moore scored a game-high 23 points on 9 of 17 shooting for Orono while Ally Moore dished out seven assists.

Marshall built up a 29-24 edge on the glass, led by eight rebounds each from Drake and Fahl and another six apiece from Bigler and Paige Gillingham. Drake’s four offensive rebounds were also a game-high while Gillingham and Fahl each grabbed another three, propelling Marshall to a 12-5 edge on the offensive glass.

Each team logged 20 turnovers in the game, with Drake accounting for four steals for Marshall and Gillingham and Avery Schneekloth each snagging another two.

Marshall, now 20-1 on the season, hosts South Dakota Class AA No. 2 Brandon Valley (11-1) tonight at 7:15 p.m. The visiting Lynx have not lost since their 53-43 season-opener loss against undefeated O’Gorman.

New Ulm Cathedral 65,

Wabasso 52

WABASSO — Big games from Elizabeth Morin and Ava Damyn weren’t enough to lift the Wabasso girls basketball team to a win on Saturday afternoon. Despite a competitive first half, New Ulm Cathedral pulled away after the break to down the Rabbits 65-52.

Morin was the team’s leading scorer with 19 points on 6 of 16 shooting from the field and 3 of 4 shooting from beyond the arc. She also grabbed six rebounds and recorded a pair of steals and a pair of blocks on the defensive end.

Samyn led the Rabbits on the glass with a game-high 13 rebounds. Her three offensive boards tied her with Aylah Jenniges for second on the team to Anistasia Smith’s six.

Audrey Johnson logged five blocks and a steal for Wabasso and Sara Carlson added seven rebounds and a team-high five assists.

Lakeview 71, Wabasso 44

COTTONWOOD — Brynn Stensrud and Anah Schmidt combined for 43 points to lead the Lakeview girls basketball team past Wabasso 71-44 Monday night, marking its fourth straight win. Stensrud led with 22 points to Schmidt’s 21.

With a close 27-20 halftime lead, the Lakers put their foot on the gas and outshot the Rabbits 44-24 throughout the second half to pull away to a larger lead.

Stensrud, Megan Schwartz and Savanna Louwagie all collected five rebounds on the night. Stensrud also had a team-high five steals.

Aubreight Rausch also distributed four assists to lead Lakeview.

For Wabasso, Sara Carlson led with 18 points behind 4 for 8 shooting at the 3-point line. Aylah Jenniges followed with 10 points, and Anistasia Smith had a team-high nine rebounds. Audrey Johnson also dished four assists.

Wabasso (1-23) will look for a win and has a quick turnaround to host Lester Prairie (14-7) tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Lakeview (16-6) will host Minneota (13-10) on Thursday at 7:45 p.m.

Hancock 84,

Minneota 42

HANCOCK — The Minneota girls basketball team was dealt a tough hand on all aspects and fell to No. 9 Hancock 84-42 Monday night.

Kiersyn Hulzebos led the Vikings with 11 points, followed by Jaylyn Coequyt’s 8 points and team-high nine rebounds. Eden Meagher also collected six rebounds, and Sarah Gruenes finished with another 8 points.

Minneota committed 22 turnovers to Hancock’s 10, 12 of which came from steals, and were outrebounded 33-27.

The Vikings were held to just 32% from the field, and went 3 of 12 from the perimeter.

Minneota (13-10) will look to get back on track when it travels to Lakeview (16-6) on Thursday at 7:45 p.m.

Montevideo 62, Canby 40

MONTEVIDEO –The Canby girls basketball team struggled to find scoring depth on Monday night. Only one Lancer converted more than two field goals and only three knocked down more than one as Canby fell 62-40 against Montevideo.

Brynn Kockelman headed the team’s offense with 19 points on 7 of 18 shooting. Her four rebounds were also shy only of Ella Thovson’s five and Ava Danielson’s six.

Danielson also scored 4 points on 2 of 8 shooting while Jordyn Jostock contributed 6 points on 2 of 3 shooting.

Canby falls to 12-10 on the season and next hosts Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (3-15) for its penultimate home game on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Wabasso 97, YME 52

GRANITE FALLS — Five players finished in double digits to lead the Wabasso boys basketball team past Yellow Medicine East 97-52 Monday night. Calvin Hanna led the way with 20 points behind six 3-pointers.

The Rabbits finished with an impressive 25 assists, 24 steals and 40 rebounds on the night to seal the victory. They led by 13 points at the half.

Joseph Rohlik followed Hanna with 17 points on 8 of 10 field goal shooting, while Tavyn Larson tallied 16 points, Brayden Guetter had 13 and Jayden Remiger followed with 11.

Kemp, Rohlik and Larson each led with seven rebounds a piece as well. Hanna and Kemp each collected four steals.

YME finished with 27 rebounds, six steals and 11 assists.

Gunnar Fagen led the Sting with 18 points on 9 of 15 field goal shooting.

Cooper McCosh followed with 9 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.

YME (2-18) will continue looking for a win when it next hosts Canby (0-18) on Tuesday with a 7:15 p.m. tip off.

Wabasso (12-8) has now won three of its last four and will look to pick up another win when it returns home to host Lac qui Parle Valley (9-12) at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
