WASECA — A red-hot shooting night from Cooper Mensink wasn’t enough to boost the Class AAA No. 10 Marshall boys basketball team to a revenge win over Class AA No. 2 Waseca on Friday night. Mensink scored a team-high 28 points, but Waseca’s Deron and Damarius Russell scored 28 and 29 respectively as the Bluejays topped the Tigers 88-73.
When Marshall and Waseca last met on Jan. 4, the Bluejays defeated the Tigers 71-52. The Tigers responded to the loss with eight consecutive victories, but have now lost two in a row after falling to South Dakota Class AA No. 2 Brandon Valley 65-60 on Tuesday.
Mensink shot 10 of 18 from the field in the game and, more impressively, 7 of 13 from beyond the arc. Alex Franson was Marshall’s second-leading scorer in the game with 11 points on 5 of 14 shooting while Mason Graven added another 8 after making each of his three field goal attempts.
In addition to the Russells, Carson Ohnstad also scored 21 points for the Bluejays.
Despite the loss, Marshall controlled the glass in the game. The Tigers outrebounded the Bluejays 32-18, including an 11-7 edge on the offensive glass. Oliver Boigt led the team with seven total and three offensive rebounds, while Mensink grabbed another five total boards.
Turnovers were a major factor in the game’s outcome; Waseca came away with 12 steals to Marshall’s five. Franson accounted for four of the Tigers’ five steals on the defensive end while Graven accounted for the other, as well as a block. Voigt blocked two shots as well.
Marshall falls to 14-5 with the loss and will look to return to form when it opens a five-game homestand against Class AA No. 3 Harrisburg (S.D.) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The game is the Tigers’ third consecutive game against a team ranked top 3 in its class.
