Franson, Mensink combine for 52 in Marshall win over St. Peter

Marhall 89, St. Peter 69
ST. PETER — Despite being tied at 23 points apiece halfway through the first half, the Marshall boys basketball team surged late in its game against St. Peter to build a 13-point halftime lead before cruising to an 89-69 road win over the Saints on Tuesday night.
Alex Franson and Cooper Mensink shined for the Tigers in the win, combining for 52 points. Franson scored a game-high 28 points on 10 of 15 from the field and a blazing hot 6 of 8 shooting from 3-point range, while Mensink went 9 of 15 from the field and 3 of 8 from the arc. Both were perfect from the charity stripe on two and three attempts respectively.
As a team, Marshall shot 44% on 25 attempts from beyond the arc while St. Peter shot 35% on 23 attempts. The Saints did shoot 75% on 2-point attempts but it wasn’t enough to dig their way back into the game.
Mensink led Marshall on the boards with five rebounds. No other Tiger had more than three as St. Peter outrebounded the Tigers 24-20.
Jayden Meister and Mensink each recorded a block and a steal in the win while Franson logged a pair of steals.
Marshall (7-3) will remain on the road to take on Redwood Valley (10-1) on Thursday at 7:15 p.m. At the time of print, the Cardinals have won nine consecutive games.
Minneota 86, Canby 74
MINNEOTA — The Minneota boys basketball team held on for an 86-74 win over Canby Tuesday evening, snapping a five-game losing streak. The Lancers remain looking for a first win.
The game saw five lead changes, and Canby stayed within reach throughout the game’s entirety. Four Vikings scored in double-digits to help the win.
Easton Johnston led Minneota with 18 points to his six rebounds. Both Lincoln Jerzak and Tate Peterson finished with 17 points, and Lucas Rybinski finished with 16 along with five steals. Johnston also had a team-high five 3-pointers, and Jerzak distributed five assists.
For Canby, Owen Peterson finished with a game-high 22 points behind four 3-pointers.
Jack Abrahamson followed with 18 points, and Cayden Anderson tallied 16.
A large difference maker was Minneota’s 17 steals to Canby’s nine.
Overall, the Vikings shot 40% from the field, just 23% at the perimeter and 59% at the free throw line. Canby shot at 42-27-64% marks.
Minneota (4-6) will next host Ortonville for its third consecutive home game on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Canby (0-11) will look to find its way into the win column when it hosts Lac qui Parle Valley (3-6) on Friday at 7:15 p.m.
TMB 80, RCW 37
RENVILLE — Griffin Zick dished out a game-high seven assists while tying Trevor Smith for second on the team with seven rebounds as the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton boys basketball team routed Renville County West 80-37 on Tuesday night.
In terms of scoring, Zick’s 14 points on 5 of 10 shooting ranked third on the team. Smith led the team with 29 points on 11 of 23 from the field while Alex Munson added another 21 points on 9 of 17 shooting.
Munson grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds and also dished out five assists in the win.
Defensively, Smith led the group with four steals.
TMB shot 48% from the field as a unit, as well as 42% from 3-point range on 38 attempts. RCW, meanwhile, shot 29% from the field and 14% from 3 on 22 attempts.
Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (9-2) will return to its home court to host No. 2 Dawson-Boyd (9-2) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
No. 2 Dawson-Boyd at MACCRAY
CLARA CITY — Drew Hjelmeland was red-hot from the field for the No. 2 Dawson-Boyd basketball team on Tuesday night. The senior forward nearly outscored MACCRAY himself with a game-high 33 points in the Blackjacks’ 105-34 win.
Hjelmeland shot 13 of 17 from the field and 3 of 3 from beyond the arc. Adding in additional scoring. Brayson Boike finished with 24 points on 10 of 16 shooting while Gunner Liebl and Jaxton Hastad contributed 12 and 10 points respectively.
Boike and Hjelmeland each grabbed nine rebounds on the night, including five offensive boards for Boike and three for Hjelmeland. As a team, Dawson-Boyd outrebounded MACCRAY 34-15, with 13 of the Blackjacks’ boards coming on the offensive end.
Boike dished out a game-high six assists while Liebl contributed another five.
On the defensive end, Boike accounted for three of the Blackjacks’ seven blocks while Hjelmeland and Carson Stratmoen each contributed another two. Hjelmeland’s four steals also tied Liebl for a game-high.
Dawson-Boyd (8-2) will go on the road to take on Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (9-2) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Lakeview 75, YME 55
COTTONWOOD — Dylan Caron and Braylon Breyfogle paved the way for a skid-snapping win for the Lakeview boys basketball team on Tuesday night. Entering their home matchup against Yellow Medicine East on a three-game losing streak, the duo combined for 36 points as the Lakers downed the Sting 74-55.
Caron was particularly efficient with his scoring, shooting 7 of 10 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers for 16 points. Breyfogle scored a game-high 20 points on 6 of 16 from the field and also came away with four steals. His five rebounds tied Tyden Marczak for second on the team to Jackson Staab’s seven.
Staab also scored 10 points in the win on eight attempts.
Wakinyan Greycloud led the Sting with 16 points on 7 of 15 shooting while Eric Jimenez and Jacob Peterson chipped in 12 and 11 points respectively. Greycloud also distributed a game-high seven assists and his five rebounds were second on the Sting to Gunnar Fagen’s six.
Gavin Torvik logged three blocks for YME.
Lakeview (5-7) will wrap up its two-game homestand against Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg (3-5) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Yellow Medicine East (2-7) will open a two-game homestand when it takes on MACCRAY (2-8) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
