Finding ‘something to celebrate’
Tigers fall to Worthington despite season-high score

MARSHALL — The Marshall gymnastics team put together its highest point total of the season on Thursday night when it hosted the Worthington Trojans. While Marshall wasn’t able to pull out a win, they put forth a valiant effort in a 136.275-118.425 loss.
“That’s something to celebrate, especially this far into the season,” Marshall head coach Samantha Nielsen said. “We’re about two weeks from sections, so we’re throwing some new skills in before we get to sections, so it’s really nice to see that those are paying off in their scores.”
Autumn Deutz was the Tigers’ top scorer in the meet, finishing third with an all-around score of 31.675. Worthington’s Brooklyn Dykstra and Jordis Weber finished first and second at 34.675 and 33.350.
After Deutz, Marshall also took the next three all-around spots. Shyann Murphy and Chioma Onyeaghala took fourth and fifth at 29.600 and 29.425, while Leah Wing rounded out the Marshall scorers at 27.725.
“They really became motivated to get those new skills and you can see it in their scores at the meet,” Nielsen said of her team. “When they throw those new skills in, they can get higher scores, which is motivating in itself. Then just as a team, we all want to try to get the highest score we can together, so we’re trying to throw our best routines for the team.”
Onyeaghala put together Marshall’s top single-event finish, taking fourth in the beam at 8.300. Deutz also placed sixth in the event at 8.175.
Onyeaghala also placed sixth in the vault at 8.15, just ahead of Wing’s 8.05, Deutz’s 7.775 and Murphy’s 7.700.
Deutz was the Tigers’ top finisher in the bars at 7.725 while Murphy was one spot behind her in sixth at 7.450.
Deutz closed out the floor routine with an 8.00 score, good for sixth place, while Murphy and Onyeaghala scored a 7.65 and 7.45 respectively.
Marshall will next host New Ulm on Monday at 6 p.m. for its penultimate home meet. From there, Marshall will wrap up its home schedule against Luverne on Friday.
“We have one practice between now and Monday, but I really do think that we’re working on cleaning up the new skills that we’ve been getting and also just cleaning up their routines,” Nielsen said, adding that the team has done a good job of building up the atmosphere of the events by cheering each other on. “Since it is a smaller group, they’ve gotten to bond a lot this season, so it’s really nice to see them cheering each other on.”
