Sarah Gruenes’ double-double leads Minneota to second win

Marshall 50, Harrisburg 26

HARRISBURG, S.D. — With shooting 47% from the field and only allowing 11 points in the first half, the No. 3 Marshall girls basketball team extends to a four-game winning streak to start the season after defeating Harrisburg, S.D., 50-26 Thursday evening on the road.

The Tigers built up a 28-11 lead at half time, and never let up on the gas in the second.

Reese Drake led all scorers with 17 points and five rebounds, followed by Taleigha Bigler with 11 points. Kyah Pinckney finished with 8 points.

Despite shooting only 25% from the 3-point line, going 4-for-16, Marshall was about to make up for it by finding looks inside.

Harrisburg was held to shooting 32% from the field and went scoreless from the arc on 15 attempts.

Marshall (4-0) will go on the road for its fourth straight game to take on Luverne (0-3) tonight at 6 p.m.

Minneota 75, YME 54

MINNEOTA — The Minneota girls basketball team are starting the season off with two wins, after defeating Yellow Medicine East 75-54 Thursday evening behind a double-double performance from Sarah Gruenes, who finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Jaylyn Coequyt had a team-high 18 points with seven rebounds, while Nevaeh Hennen added 17 points and shot 2-for-3 from the 3-point line, the Vikings’ only points from the arc on the night.

Overall, Minneota shot 47.8% from the field, to YME’ 31.7%.

The Sting were led by Bailey Mortenson, who also finished with a double-double and game-high 23 points with 17 rebounds, 10 of which were defensive boards.

Abigale Bones followed Mortenson with 10 points.

Minneota (2-0) will remain on its home court for its next game, hosting Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (3-0) on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Yellow Medicine East (2-1) will play another road matchup when it takes on Renville County West (2-2) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Lakeview 68, TMB 42

COTTONWOOD — The Lakeview girls basketball team got its third straight win to begin the season Thursday evening after beating Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 68-42.

Brynn Stensrud led the Lakers with 26 points, five rebounds and three steals. She shot 11-for-18 from the field and 3-for-5 from the 3-point line.

Brook Gunlogson and Anah Schmidt each tallied another 15 points. Megan Schwartz had a team-high seven rebounds, while Savanna Louwagie grabbed another three steals and Aubreigh Rausch had a team best three assists.

Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (1-2) will return to Tracy to host Canby (1-3) on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

Lakeview (3-0) will travel to the Viking Gym to take on the Minneota Vikings (2-0) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Canby 52, RCW 45

CANBY — The Canby girls basketball team got its first win of the season Thursday evening with a 52-45 victory over Renville County West.

Canby (1-3) will head to Tracy for a matchup against the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Panthers (1-2) on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

Dawson-Boyd 67, Ortonville 39

ORTONVILLE — The Dawson-Boyd girls basketball team got its first win of the season in comfortable fashion with a 67-39 victory over Ortonville Thursday evening behind five players scoring in double digits.

Claire Stratmoen led the way with a game-high 18 points with nine rebounds and five steals. Alyssa Swedzinkski followed with 13 points and another nine rebounds. Alivia Estling had 12 points, Lindsey Lund finished with 11 while Laura Schreier tallied 10 points.

The Blackjacks outscored the Trojans 33-14 in the first half, which helped power them the rest of the way. The team shot 31% overall from the field, and 100% from the three going 5-for-5.

Dawson-Boyd (1-3) will head back to its home court to host Lac qui Parle Valley (1-3) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
