Mauch finished with six goals and Foley had a team-high five assists as the Tigers move to 11-0 on the season.

MARSHALL — Eight different Tigers found the back of the net in the Marshall girls hockey team’s 14-2 win against Windom Tuesday night, the largest scoring output of the season. Brooklyn Mauch had a historic night netting six goals, and tied the Minnesota state prep girls hockey record for most points in a single game with 11. It’s also the first time a player has finished with double digit points since 2010.

A seven-goal second period led Marshall to the win, moving the team to a perfect 11-0 as they near the halfway point in the regular season.

“We came into this game knowing what we had to do, and I think we got it done,” Mauch said. “I think we could have played a little bit better, but I know we were just trying to get through the game and get some first varsity goals in there.”

Eighth grader Brynlee Dieken scored her first varsity goal with just over three minutes to go in the third period, for Marshall’s last goal of the night. Ava Kolander and Brielle Felton Krog also scored their first goals of the season.

“I’m so proud of them [teammates scoring first goals], we all are,” Mauch said. “We’ve all been waiting for the moment they get it.”

Mauch, only in her sophomore campaign, also surpassed 100 varsity points Tuesday and now sits at 101 after netting her third hat trick game of the season. Her other two three-goal games were on Nov. 18 in Marshall’s 10-1 win, also over Windom, and on Nov. 30 in its 7-4 victory over Pine City.

“Sometimes I can make a move but I always make sure to look before I do that,” Mauch said regarding her offensive consistency. “Me and my linemates, we always work hard with each other … Always knowing where everyone is.”

Overall, Marshall had 45 shots on goals to Windom’s seven. Abbey Foley had a team-high six assists followed by Mauch’s five.

Windom came into the night with a struggling 1-7 start to its season on a seven-game losing streak, all of which but two have been decided by six or more goals.

“I feel like we didn’t really come out and play our best game … We played them earlier and beat them pretty badly,” assistant coach Chris Foley said. “I think you can get into that mindset where you come out and you just think you’re going to breeze through it, and I feel like we did that through the first and second.”

Lily Stelter finished with a .714 save percentage in the net, saving five of the seven shots she faced.

Marshall didn’t take long before netting its first goal in the second minute of the game and took control of the ice early on. In the first period alone, Marshall had 17 shots on goal while limiting Windom to just three shots.

“It’s nice to know you’ve got a group of girls that can come out because we are going to have our off days. But, they’ll come out and still put up big numbers, even not playing their best,” coach Foley said.

Windom’s Addison Schumacher was assessed a minor penalty for tripping. Foley got the night’s first goal seconds after as Mauch shot the puck, which caught the side of the right goal pole and Foley was there to tap it in on the power play.

A similar play happened three minutes later with Mauch, Foley and Olivia Degroot closed in on the net. Degroot overshot the puck just slightly when in the crease, but Mauch was placed on the opposite end of the net to catch the puck and tap it in.

Again, another three minutes later, Mauch found Peyton DeMuth up the rink who netted the puck in for an early 3-0 Tigers lead.

As time was winding down in the first frame, Mauch skated up the right side of the rink after a takeaway and shot the puck into the left corner, unassisted and short-handed, while Foley was in the penalty box for minor tripping.

Despite Windom getting two goals in the second period, Marshall continued to build on its lead dominantly with seven more goals.

Mauch scored three goals in the second period. Both of them came off an assist from Foley, at the 5:26 and 8:09 marks. The third came unassisted and 1-on-1 with the goalie with 45 seconds to go. She was stickhandling the puck while closing in, and safely hit it in the back left of the net.

“It’s just day-in and day-out with Brooklyn. When you get to the rink, she’s going to give you everything she’s got,” coach Foley said. “She wants to score goals, yes, but she’s also selfless. She wants to win so badly, she’s going to make sure she puts that puck in a position to get in the net, one way or the other.”

DeMuth netted her second goal of the night coming from Mauch in the fifth minute, and Krog got her first season goal in the 11th minute.

Krog caught the puck from Ella Dockter, who went around the back of the net and fed it to her.

Kolander also got her first goal after taking a shot after crossing into Marshall’s offensive zone, and the puck flew flawlessly into the back of the net.

The Tigers wanted one more goal heading into intermission, and Kendal Beernaert was able to tap the puck in after a small cluster crowded the net on a couple of shot attempts, her second of the season.

Marshall was not slowing down entering the third period, even with its 9-point edge. The Tigers added in another pair of goals in the first two minutes.

Mauch broke through defenders and found herself again 1 on 1 with Windom’s goalie, and landed the goal.

Aubree Metheny got involved in the action shortly after on a tap-in from Mauch who skated around the back of the net with the puck.

Dieken’s time came with gametime running down, as Mauch recovered the puck on the left corner of the rink and passed it up to Dieken for an open centered shot, and the Marshall bench erupted in excitement.

“I think you look to the bench and in the locker room, and you see a lot of selfless girls in that locker room,” coach Foley said. “They want others to succeed, and I think that’s what’s making us such a good team right now.”

The Tigers are just about midway through the regular season and sit in first place in the Big South Conference. Minnesota River follows with a 7-1 record, who the Tigers will host on Dec. 21 at 12 p.m.

“I think we’re going to keep going, and not get too cocky. We’re going to stay confident with ourselves,” Mauch said. “We’re going to not focus on who we’re playing, we’re just going to focus on how we’re playing.”

The Tigers will next travel to take on Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato (2-6) on Thursday at 7 p.m.

“We told the girls in the locker room and said, ‘You need to come to practice tomorrow ready to work, because we’ve had a couple softer games in the past few weeks,'” coach Foley said. “They need to understand that it’s not going to be that way moving forward. It’s going to get tougher and tougher.”
