HUTCHINSON — Autumn Deutz shattered her own school record in the 1-meter dive at the Section 3A girls swim and dive championships on Saturday, helping the Marshall Tigers to a fifth-place finish and becoming one of two Tigers to qualify for the Class A state meet, alongside teammate Finley Pelz.
In the 1-meter dive, Dutz put together a score of 335.85 to break her own record by more than 40 points. Mound Westonka’s Erica Johnson won the event with 374.20 points while Delano’s Amelia Nelson and Orono’s Eliza Hansen rounded out the podium at 368.40 and 337.75.
Deutz also finished just shy of the state cut time in the 50-yard freestyle, setting a personal-best time of 25.32 to place fifth in the even while falling just shy of the 24.95 state standard. Delano’s Kaia Georges and Emma Ristau won the event at 24.43 and 24.48 while Orono’s Elle Davis took third at 24.85.
For the second year in a row, Pelz qualified for the state meet in the 500-yard freestyle. Just an eighth grader, Pelz placed fifth in the event at 5:22.11, trailing just behind Mound Westonka’s Laney Hendrickson’s 5:22.02 and Orono’s Mallory Knutson’s 5:21.06. Orono and Mound Westonka also had the top two finishers in the event with Lola Schottler winning at 5:14.71 and Annemarie Johnson placing second at 5:14.28. Each of the four finishers ahead of Pelz was a junior or senior.
Pelz also placed eighth in the 200-yard freestyle at 2:01.15 to qualify for the state meet there as well, beating out the standard of 2:01.21.
Marshall put together a team score of 154, sitting between Hutchinson’s 254 and Watertown-Mayer’s 102. The mark was an improvement from last year’s seventh-place finish in the 10-team field, and bodes well for the future with Alana Condezo being the team’s only graduating senior.
Orono and Delano placed first and second with 516 and 471 points while Mound Westonka placed third with 396.
Condezo finished 10th in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:04.34 and 10th in the 100-yard butterfly at 1:04.74.
Condezo was also the third leg of Marshall’s 200-yard freestyle relay team, alongside Deutz, Grace Rokeh and Pelz. The team finished fourth in the event at 1:43.46, leaving them just shy of the state standard of 1:42.58. Orono won the event at 1:38.39, followed by Delano at 1:38.46 and Mound Westonka at 1:40.74.
The same quartet also placed fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay at 3:49.71, shy of the state standard of 3:45.13. Delano and Orono took first and second at 3:33.97 and 3:38.04, followed by Mound Westonka at 3:42.67.
Rokeh placed 15th in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:23.88 and 15th in the 100-yard freestyle at 58.28
Aaliyah Podratz placed 15th in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:18.69 while Hailey Larsen placed 15th in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:52.81. The two also competed alongside Leah Hybbert and Alex Brown in the 200-yard medley relay, finishing at 2:07.95.
Pelz and Deutz will compete at the Class A state swim meet at the University of Minnesota’s Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. Class A diving preliminaries for Class A are scheduled for Thursday at noon while the swimming preliminaries are slated for Friday at noon. Class A finals for swimming and diving events will be held on Saturday at noon.
