Canby/Minneota places 14th at Class A state meet

ST. PAUL — The Canby/Minneota girls cross country team wrapped up its season at the Class A state meet on Saturday, placing 14th in the field of 16 at Les Bolstad Golf Course.

The Lancers totaled 250 points at the meet, putting them 1 back of Minnewaska Area and 4 back of St. John’s Prep. They beat out 15th-place Loyola-Cleveland-St. Clair’s score of 254 and Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey/Red Rock Central’s 347.

Cotter/Hope won the meet with 116 points, edging out Redwood Valley’s 121 and Rochester Lourdes’ 150.

Freshman Mya Pesek was Canby/Minneota’s top finisher on the day, placing 53rd overall at 20:24.0. The mark was on par with her performance at the 2023 state champions, in which she placed 49th at 20:20.1. Pesek’s time was also a slight step off of her season personal-record of 19:27.3, which she set at the Camden Conference Championship.

Sophomore Taylor Ourada was the Lancers’ No. 2 runner on the day, placing 76th at 20:48.9 to improve on her 2023 state championship finish of 21:54.8. Senior Claire Stoks also placed 85th at 21:02.0 in her final meet as a Lancer.

Adri Christianson led the final wave of blue and orange scorers in 119th at 22:06.9. Ava Danielson and Joanna Briggs were shortly behind her, taking 122nd at 22:11.0 and 132nd at 22:37.0

Staples-Motley’s Audrey Brownell was the individual champion at 18:17.2 while Loyola Cleveland-St. Clair’s Charlotte Meyer and Cotter/Hope’s Sonja Semling took second and third place at 18:24.0 and 18:49.8.

Wabasso’s Elsie Leopold took home All-State honors with a 14th-place performance at 19:32.6, as did Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey/Red Rock Central’s Katie Johnson at 19:38.8.

Murray County Central/Fulda and Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd also had individual qualifiers in the meet with Mara Clarke placing 45th at 20:14.3 and Brynn Gloege placing 50th at 20:18.8.

While not contributing to the team score, Lillie Wollum placed 141st at 23:02.1

Class A boys

ST. PAUL — The Redwood Valley boys cross country team earned itself a state championship on Saturday at Les Bolstad Golf Course, edging out Luverne for the Class A title.

As a team, Redwood Valley finished with 86 points to Luverne’s 91 while Cotter/Hope rounded out the podium with 122 points.

Leading the charge for the Cardinals, William Ahrens and Kilen Cilek took second and third overall at the race at 15:35.8 and 15:49.5. Cotter/Hope’s Erik Semling was the individual champion at 15:23.5.

Murray County Central/Fulda’s Evan Baumgardner earned All-State status with a 22nd-place finish at 16:46.2 while his teammate Matthew Stapek placed 96th at 17:46.6.

Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd’s Gavin Carl placed 60th at 17:19.5 while Wabasso’s Andrew Morin placed 112th at 17:59.7.

Redwood Valley’s Landyn Nordby placed 21st at 16:45.2 while Tyler Robinson and Clayton Salmon rounded out the state champs’ scorers in 51st at 17:08.9 and 63rd at 17:21.1.
