Minneota’s balanced attack blows past Blackjacks

Minneota 3, Dawson-Boyd 0

MINNEOTA — After a long weekend of tough competition, the No. 3 Minneota Vikings got back in the win column on Tuesday night with a 25-7, 25-14, 25-5 win over Dawson-Boyd.

The victory ended a four-game skid for the Vikings, who had lost to Class 4A No. 2 Champlin Park, Class 1A No. 1 Mayer Lutheran, and Class 4A opponents Bloomington Jefferson and Burnsville at the Southwest Challenge in Marshall on Friday and Saturday.

In Tuesday’s win, setters Libby Sussner and Nevaeh Hennen spread the ball around with seven different hitters getting a kill on the night. Sussner finished the match with 15 set assists while Hennen recorded another 10.

Eden Meagher led the Vikings’ hitters with seven kills on the night while Jaylyn Coequyt added another six. Sarah Gruenes, Elivia Faris, Leah Coequyt and Natalie Ratajczak each chipped in another three kills.

In the front row, Leah Coequyt headed the defense with four blocks while Gruenes and Jaylyn Coequyt added three and two respectively. In the back row, Abby Rolbiecki led the team with seven digs.

Natyah Ritter led the Blackjacks’ back row with five digs while Reese Johnson fronted the attack with three kills. Bailey Bothun and Matti Gruwell tallied six and four set assists respectively and Dawson-Boyd did not register a block on the night.

Minneota improves to 5-4 on the season with the win and will look to gather some momentum when it goes on the road to face Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg (0-7) on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Dawson-Boyd falls to 0-7 on the season with the loss and will look to pick up its first victory of the year when it hosts the 3-5 Lakeview Lakers at the same time. 

RTR 3, HLOF 0

OKABENA — After dropping its final two games at the Southwest Challenge over the weekend, the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton volleyball team snapped back into form on Tuesday with a 25-15, 25-13, 25-20 win over Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda.

Nothing got by libero Avery Schreurs on Tuesday, as she finished the night with 19 digs while Sarah Thooft and Laken Baartman added 10 and nine respectively.

Brezlyn Buchert distributed 26 set assists in the match while Ellefson added another five. On the finishing end, Ava Guida led the team with 10 kills, followed by Baartman’s seven and Thooft’s six.

Guida also notched a pair of blocks on the night while Karbo and Thooft each registered one.

RTR, now 5-4 on the year, will remain on the road when it takes on Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey (1-6-1) on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

MCC 3, RRC 2

LAMBERTON — The Murray County Central volleyball team staged an epic five-set comeback in its match against Red Rock Central on Tuesday night. After the Falcons claimed the first two sets 25-17 and 25-20, the Rebels locked in with three straight victories — 26-24, 25-20, 15-10 — to even their record on the season.

Falcon setter Natasha Erickson was a fantastic distributor in the loss, finishing the night with 50 set assists. Tia Donkersloot capitalized with 22 kills while Abby Evans registered another 11.

The Rebels diversified their attack with Elyse Paulzine finishing with 17 set assists, Kelli Miller adding 15 and Thea Schneider adding another 11. Reese Gilbertson led the team with 12 kills followed by 10 from Kate Blankenship and another seven from Schneider.

Kate Blankenship and Emmi Peltola led the Rebels defensively. Each recorded 23 digs on the night, with Peltola doing so without a single dig error. Schneider and Gilbertson also contributed 15 and 10 digs respectively.

In the front row, Calleigh Doeden registered three blocks while Suttyn Schreiver added another two.

Maia Scheffler led the RRC back row with 24 digs in the loss while Erickson added another 12. In the front row, Shylin Hagert had eight total blocks while Donkersloot tallied another five.

MCC improves to 2-2 with the win while RRC falls to 1-3. The Rebels will host Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda (3-5) in Slayton next while RRC will go on the road to take on Hills-Beaver Creek (2-2). Both matchups are scheduled to get started on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Wabasso 3, SESM 1

WABASSO — The Wabasso Rabbits continue their undefeated season with another victory Tuesday night over Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 3-1, with set scores of 25-20, 25-22, 22-25 and 25-23, dropping the third set.

Audrey Johnson, who recently surpassed a thousand career digs over the weekend, led the team with 17 digs. Sara Carlson followed with 15, and Britta Brand with another 10.

Carlson paced the offense with 48 total assists, which led to a team-high 21 kills from Alivia Olson. Carly Fenger and Camryn Irlbeck also had 11 kills respectively.

Camryn Irlbeck had three blocks on the night, two solo and one assisted.

Carlson and Olson also had two serve aces a piece.

Wabasso now moves to an 8-0 overall record, 2-0 in conference play. They next will travel to Winthrop on Thursday to take on Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop at 7 p.m.

SWMC 3, WWG 1

WESTBROOK — The Westbrook-Walnut Grove volleyball team’s defensive prowess couldn’t stop the Southwest Minnesota Christian hitters on Tuesday night as the Chargers fell to the Eagles 26-24, 25-16, 20-25, 25-19.

Setter Hadley Jenniges led the Chargers’ versatile back row efforts with 17 digs while Olivia Locke and Natalie Wahl added 16 and 15 respectively. Jenniges’ 17 set assists also paced the team along with Myah Maznio’s 15.

Leah Carter was the Chargers’ leading hitter with 10 kills while Riley Parker and Wahl chimed in with eight and seven respectively.

WWG falls to 6-2 on the year with the loss. The Chargers will still have the opportunity to pick up their third win in four games when they go on the road to face Adrian-Ellsworth (2-2) on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

MACCRAY 3, YME 0

GRANITE FALLS — A strong blocking game from Abbey Bones and Hannah Bjorndal wasn’t enough to get the Yellow Medicine East volleyball team to a win on Tuesday night as the Sting fell in straight sets to MACCRAY. The Wolverines defeated the Sting 25-23, 25-7, 25-17.

Bones and Bjorndal each had three solo blocks on the night to lead the front row defensively. In the back, Klaira Shackelford and Ashley Luepke each recorded eight digs.

Shackelford also generated some offense for the Sting with four service aces in the game while Alana Almich led the team with six kills. Lexi Stengel logged eight assists in the loss.

Yellow Medicine East drops to 1-8 on the season with the loss and will look to end its seven-match skid when it goes on the road to face the 0-2 Ortonville Trojans on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

Canby 3, Ortonville 0 

CANBY — Coming off a strong tournament appearance at the Southwest Challenge over the weekend, claiming fourth place out of 32 teams, the Canby Lancers kept their good stride going with a three-set victory over the Ortonville Trojans Tuesday night. 

Karlie Wollum led the way with 11 kills, while Emily Nelson tallied another seven, and Haley Noyes with six. The Lancers had an overall 41.3% kill percentage. 

Nelson had seven service aces on 18 total serve attempts, and 14 assists, while Brynn Kockelman had a team-high 15 assists. 

Aliyah Rangaard led the defense with six digs, and Wollum collected an additional five. Nelson and Karli Weber had three blocks respectively. 

Canby, now 10-2 overall and 1-0 in conference, will next travel to Prinsburg to play Central Minnesota Christian on Thursday at 7 p.m.

TMB 3, LQPV 0 

TRACY — The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Panthers got back in the win column Tuesday night, defeating Lac Qui Parle Valley in three straight sets of 25-19, 25-23 and 25-23. 

Kyli Carter led the offense with 12 kills, while Allie Adams collected another eight. Malaina Ankrum, Allison Edwards and Braelynn Kirk each had another four kills a piece. 

Edwards, Ankrum, Adams and Brianna Duscher also had a solo block each. 

Helping the defense was Kirk with a team-high six digs, while Teagan Viessman and Piper Freeburg tallied another five respectively. 

TMB moves on to 3-6 overall and will look to continue the good momentum as they travel to Clara City to compete against MACCRAY on Thursday at 7 p.m.

CMC 3, Lakeview 0

COTTONWOOD — The Lakeview volleyball team fell in straight sets to Central Minnesota Christian on Tuesday night, 25-3, 25-10, 25-16. The loss was the Lakers’ fourth in their last five games.

Stats were not available at the time of print.

Lakeview, now 3-6 on the year, will go on the road to take on Dawson-Boyd (0-7) on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
