Willhite’s pitching pushes Long Sox past Jaxx

AMATEUR BASEBALL

Lamberton 5, Wabasso 0

WABASSO — A strong start from Luke Willhite and a quality relief outing from Eli Fest helped the Lamberton Long Sox keep Wabasso off the board Tuesday night in the Long Sox’s 5-0 road victory.

Willhite tossed the first eight innings for Lamberton, striking out 10 batters with no walks and six hits allowed. In relief, Fest earned the save with a scoreless ninth inning, striking out one batter with no walks or hits allowed.

Both teams were tied scoreless until the top of the fourth. A Seth Guetter single and a Will Carlson double put two men in scoring position before a ground out from Isaac Jenniges and a Fest sacrifice fly drove in both runners.

Carlson scored two runs on the day after he also walked, stole second and scored on a Jenniges single in the sixth inning. Carlson, Jenniges and Holden Salfer each had two hits and a walk on the day.

Joe Liebl started on the mound for Wabasso, holding Lamberton to three earned runs on four hits over seven innings. He also allowed five walks and a pair of strikeouts.

Adryen Tietz led the Jaxx’s offense with three singles and a stolen base. Yet, no other batter had more than a single on the day. Liebl was the only Jaxx player to reach third base after he reached on an error and advanced on a pair of passed balls in the ninth.

Salfer singled to lead off the eighth inning and, with two outs, advanced to second on a Carlson single and scored on a Jenniges double. He also drove in the game’s final run when Colby Wall walked in the ninth inning, advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches and scored on an Austin Imker single.

Josh Guetter and CJ Theiss each allowed one earned run over one inning of relief. Guetter struck out three batters while allowing three hits while Theis allowed a hit, a walk and got a strikeout.

Wabasso falls to 3-12 with the loss and will look to end its three-game skid in a road matchup at Marshall today at 7:30 p.m.

Lamberton improves to 11-4 with the win and will look to pick up its fourth straight victory when it goes on the road to face Leavenworth on Thursday.

LEGION BASEBALL

Slayton 7, Marshall 15U 5

SLAYTON — The Marshall VFW Orange 15U baseball team couldn’t keep pace with the Slayton bats on Tuesday night, falling 7-5 in the road matchup.

Marshall struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning but Slayton tied it back up in the bottom of the frame. After a scoreless second, Marshall regained the lead with three runs in the top of the third but Slayton responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame and maintained that lead for the remainder of the game.

Eli Weedman had a pair of hits for Marshall while Trae Bailey added a double. Keanan Coequeyt also walked twice on the day.

Teague Meyer had a pair of hits for Slayton and earned the win on the mound after pitching 4 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. he struck out five batters while allowing a hit and a walk.

For Marshall, Bailey was charged with the loss after allowing five unearned runs and one earned run over three innings. Cole Raley also pitched three innings of relief, allowing one earned run on two hits.

Marshall falls to 13-8 on the season and will next play on Friday when they begin play at the Brookings 16U tournament. Orange’s first day at the three-day event will include a noon game against Beresford and a 4:30 p.m. game against Madison.
