Region 4C tournament preview

WILLMAR — Three teams in the Cornbelt League around the Marshall area will be playing in the Region 4C Tournament beginning Wednesday to compete for a spot in the state tournament.

The No. 5 Granite Falls Kilowatts will begin tournament play Wednesday night against County Line’s No. 4 Sunburg at 7:30 p.m. in a single elimination game. The rest of the tournament will be double elimination and is hosted in Willmar. The No. 4 Marshall A’s will play County Line’s first-seed Atwater at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3 and No. 3 Milroy Yankees will take on County Line’s No. 2 Paynesville at 5:30 p.m. There are three state bids for the region.

The Kilowatts had to compete in a play-in tournament to secure the last spot. They defeated both Sacred Heart and the Wabasso Jaxx to do so.

In Granite Falls’ last game with Wabasso on July 27, Bryce Sneller and Nikson Knapper had a combined 2.00 ERA pitching average and six different players had hits throughout the night.

When the A’s and Yankees played one another on July 17, in which the Yankees won by one run, Mitchell Bouwman pitched for eight innings and threw 14 strikeouts. Isaac Schmitt also pitched eight innings for Milroy and threw six strikeouts.

In the 2023 4C tournament, Marshall and Milroy were both eliminated by the semi-finals after two losses. Granite Falls was not in last year.

The two other Cornbelt teams competing are No. 2 Raymond and No. 1 Bird Island.

The high seed will be considered the home team, and games will be played the following day in the case of rain.

After Wednesday’s game, the rest of the tournament will take place Aug. 3 and Aug. 4, and the following weekend Aug. 9 to Aug. 11.
