Lee walks off Chaska as Marshall advances to District finals

ST. PETER — Plate discipline and clutch hitting came through for No. 1 Marshall Orange 15U in the VFW District II playoffs on Wednesday night. It was Andrew Lee who came up big for Marshall in the end, hitting a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth to give his team a 14-13 walk-off victory over No. 3 Chaska in the winner’s bracket semifinals.

The game was tied at 12-12 after five frames and a pair of scoreless innings sent Marshall and Chaska into extras. Chaska pushed one run across on an RBI single with two outs in the top of the eighth, but Marshall wasn’t ready to give up.

In the bottom of the frame, Jackson Sirovy was hit by a pitch in the opening at-bat but courtesy runner Cody Rauch was caught stealing second, bringing Marshall back to square one. Still, Ethan Weedman was hit by another pitch and Marshall was back in business with the winning run at the plate.

A fly out put two down but Cannon Craigmile earned a walk on five pitches and Trae Bailey did the same, loading the bases and leaving the fate of the game on Lee’s shoulders. The shortstop didn’t disappoint, drilling a line drive to center field to score Weedman and Craigmile and seal the Marshall victory.

Noah Frazee earned the win on the mound for Marshall after pitching the final six innings of the game in relief. He held Chaska to three earned runs, and one unearned run, on four hits and three walks. He also struck out five batters.

Both teams scored four runs in the first inning but Chaska kept the momentum rolling with another four in the second. They shut Marshall down in the bottom of the frame and, after they traded runs in the third, the score was 9-4 Chaska.

In the fourth, Chaska bolstered its lead with a run in the top of the frame but Marshall started to eat into the deficit in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, Frazee reached on an error and Ethan Boeck singled to put two runners on. A passed ball put the duo in scoring position and Sirovy hit a two-run double to center. Weedman followed up by reaching on an error at third to drive in another run, cutting the deficit to 10-8.

Chaska added another pair of runs in the top of the fifth but again, Marshall battled back. Craigmile and Bailey each reached on errors to start the frame and Lee took advantage with a two-run single. After a line out, Frazee singled to put runners on the corners and a passed ball allowed Lee to score, making it a one-run game.

Boeck singled, prompting a Chaska pitching change with one out and runners on the corners. Still, Sirovy hit a ground out to first, allowing Frazee to score the tying run that would eventually force extras.

Lee and Sirovy each finished the day with two hits and a game-high four RBIs. Boeck led the team with three base hits while Craigmile had a triple, a single and a walk with two RBIs.

Tyler Kraft threw the first two innings for Marshall, surrendering eight earned runs and one unearned on six hits and five walks.

The district championship game was originally scheduled to be played today but, after a Chaska forfeit in the elimination bracket, Marshall took on New Ulm Silver on Wednesday night instead. The game was still ongoing at the time of publication. Marshall clinches the tournament title with a win but the teams will play again today in a winner-take-all game if New Ulm wins.
