Seven Mustangs named Academic All-District for track and field
MARSHALL — The College Sports Communicators announced their CSC Academic All-District track and field teams on Tuesday. Southwest Minnesota State University was honored with seven selections, including five from the womens team and another two from the mens team.
From the womens team, seniors Hannah Koepfinger and Nadia Sanford and juniors Sierra Clifford, Kaaryna Smidel and Shealyn Tom each got the nod. On the mens side, senior Carl Swedzinski and junior Hunter Smith earned selections.
Student-athletes are selected for the teams based on a combination of athletic and academic performance, with a maximum of five student-athletes per team being eligible for a selection.
Swedzinski, a Milroy native, earned his second consecutive selection after placing fifth in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Indoor Championships in the weight throw at 17.40 meters and fourth in the Outdoor Championships in the hammer throw at 57.05. He also has accumulated eight Academic All-NSIC selections.
Smith also earned Academic-All-District honors for the second year in a row and Academic All-Conference honors for the sixth time this year after placing seventh at the NSIC Indoor Championships’ pole vault event at 4.47 meters and fifth in outdoor season at 4.42 meters.
Sanford, Tom and Clifford each earned Academic All-District honors for the second time this year, with Sanford earning six Academic All-Conference selections and Tom and Clifford each earning another four.
Sanford, from Oak Grove, was All-Conference in the shot put during indoor track season with a runner-up toss of 14 meters in the conference meet. Tom, a pole vaulter, placed 11th in the NSIC Indoor Championships and ninth at the Outdoor Championships while Clifford placed third in the 600-meter run at the Indoor Championships at 1:37.23 and seventh in the 400 during outdoor season.
Smidel has earned four Academic All-Conference selections in her two years with SMSU track and field. She set a personal-best time of 1:07.59 in the 400-meter hurdles at the Luther Invitational in April.
Koepfinger is a two-time Academic All-NSIC selection. The Mustang master’s degree student placed 12th in the heptathlon at the Outdoor Championships, setting a school record with 4,249 points in the process, and also placed 16th in the javelin throw at 31.20 meters.
