Marshall A’s erupt early in win over Wabasso

WABASSO — The Marshall A’s rattled off six first-inning runs on Friday night to coast to a 12-2 road win over the Wabasso Jaxx in eight innings.

Peyton Grant started the A’s off strong with a leadoff double and scored on a Cody Wichmann single in the next at-bat. Connor Neubeck followed up with another single to put runners on the corners and Talan Plante hit a sacrifice fly to quickly make it a 2-0 game.

Ryan Schwagel kept the rally going by drawing a walk to put two runners on and, with two outs, Wesley Sarsland hit a two-run single and Andrew Cowden hit a two-run homer to left-center field to make the score 6-0.

Mitchell Bouwman tossed the first six innings for Marshall, allowing one earned run on six hits and five walks with eight strikeouts. In relief, Karson Rowe struck out two batters while holding Wabasso without a hit, walk or run over two innings.

Grant and Neubeck each had a pair of doubles for Marshall on the day, with Neubeck tying Wichmann with a game-high three base hits. Zach Olson also had a double for the Tigers while Sarsland, Cowden and Grant each added multiple base hits.

Colton Taylor scored the Jaxx’s first run when he walked, stole second and scored on a Josh Guether single in the third inning. In the fifth, Guether addd another run by reaching on a walk, advancing on a Joe Liebl walk and scoring on an error to make the score 7-2 after the A’s scored a run in the top of the frame.

Marshall responded to Wabasso’s second run of the game with three of their own in the top of the sixth. Grant reached on an error to start the inning and a Wichmann single put runners on the corners with no outs. Neubeck then hit a two-run double to center field and scored himself on a Schwagel sacrifice fly.

The mercy rule came into play in the eighth inning when Wichmann singled, stole second, advanced to third and scored on an error. Plante, who reached on a walk, advanced to third on the same error and scored on a Karson Rowe single to make the score 12-2.

Devan Liebl allowed eight earned runs and two unearned over six innings on the hill for Wabasso while Joe Liebl allowed two earned runs over two frames. Devan also allowed 12 hits and a pair of walks while Joe allowed two hits and two walks.

Marshall will go on the road to face Bird Island on Sunday at 1 p.m. while Wabasso will host Granite Falls at 5:30 p.m.
