Amateur baseball roundup June 26, 2024

MILROY — The Hadley Buttermakers scored early and often on Wednesday night, running away with an 11-5 road win over the Milroy Yankees.

Hadley jumped out to an early lead with three first-inning runs but Milroy matched the production in the bottom of the frame to keep the game tied.

A few innings later, Hadley pulled back ahead when Brent Hokeness tripled and scored shortly thereafter. However, Milroy again tied it up in the fourth and gained a one-run lead in the fifth. That would be the last Yankee run of the day but Hadley came back with one run in the seventh to pull ahead, four in the eighth to pull away and two more in the ninth to put the game to bed.

Owen Gillette earned the win on the mound for Hadley after pitching five shutout innings of relief. He limited Milroy to three hits and a walk while striking out nine batters.

Minneota 8, Dawson 2

MINNEOTA — A first-inning home run set the tone for the Minneota Mudhens on Wednesday as they trounced Dawson by a final score of 8-2 to move back above .500 on the season.

Ben Skorczewski broke the game open in the game’s second at-bat. Facing a 2-0 count, the Minneota designated hitter crushed a ball to left field for a solo home run to put the Mudhens on top early.

Both teams went scoreless for the next three innings before Peyton Gillund singled and and scored on a Danny Hennen single in the fifth inning. From there, the Mudhens pulled away with another six runs in the sixth.

Tate Walerius was hit by a pitch and Brock Buysse singled to put runners on the cornes with one out to start the frame. From there, a Dawson error pushed in one run and consecutive singles by Gillund, Skorczewski and Austin Buysse pushed in another two.

Tyson Sonnenburg kept the rally going with the Mudhens’ fifth consecutive single before Hennen hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Skorczewski. AJ Myhre then walked and Walerius capped off the six-run inning with a two-run single, making the score 8-0.

Danny Hennen picked up the win for Minneota in his complete-game start. He limited Dawson to two runs on the day, striking out five batters while allowing 11 hits and a pair of walks.

Blake Thompson pitched the first six innings for Dawson, surrendering eight runs on 11 hits and two walks. He struck out seven batters on the day before being relieved by Luke Kuno, who struck out four batters over three perfect innings.

The Drakes scored both of their runs in the bottom of the seventh. Kuno singled with two outs and a walk to Tygan Long and a Grayson Olson ingle loaded the bases. Kameron Sather then hit a two-run single but was thrown out advancing to second on the play, ending the inning.

Olson led all players with three hits on the day. Gillund, Skorczewski and Brock Buysse each had a pair of hits for Minneota while Sather, Kuno and Derek Gritmacker each had a pair for Dawson, including a double for Gritmacker.

Minneota improves to 7-6 with the win and will host Chokio for its next game on Friday while Dawson falls to 1-6 and will host Appleton on Friday.

WABASSO — Adryen Tietz and Joe Liebl tossed a combined shutout for the Wabasso on Wednesday, helping the Jaxx hold off Sacred Heart for a 1-0 win.

Consecutive ground outs advanced him to third and, with the game threatening to go to extra innings, Josh Guetter came up with a clutch RBI single to secure the win.

Tietz got the start for Wabasso, striking out 13 batters over seven innings. He limited Sacred Heart to one hit and four walks but a lack of run support left him with a no-decision.

CJ Theis was the only batter on either team with multiple hits, singling twice.
