Lakeview golf qualifies for state, again
WORTHINGTON — For the third season in a row, the Lakeview boys golf team is headed to the state tournament. The Lakers dominated the 3A section championship at Great Life Golf & Fitness on Thursday, finishing 23 strokes ahead of their next closest competition to claim the victory.
The Lakers finished the tournament with a team score of 688, beating out Canby’s 711, Southwest Minnesota Christian/Edgerton’s 739 and Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda’s 748. SWC/E had been in second after the first day, trailing Lakeview’s 345 by 16 strokes, but the Lakers continued to pull away as the Eagles faded.
Carson Boe was the tournament’s individual champion, carding a 142 after finishing even-par both days. He had three birdies on each day of the tournament and heads into state with high expectations after placing third last season.
Also up near the top of the leaderboard for the Lakers was Lane Arends, who carded a 164 to place fourth. He carded a 10-over on the first day of the tournament and a 12-over with two birdies on the second.
TMB’s Alex Munson finished as the tournament runner-up with 155 strokes, 13 back of Boe. The Panther junior carded a 76 on Wednesday with two birdies and shot just 1-over on the back 9 to earn his first state tournament berth.
HLOF/WWG’s Nathan Kueny also earned an individual state tournament qualification, as did Canby’s Dylan Houseman, Jack Abrahamson and Brady Hulzebos. Kueny placed third overall with a 160 while the Canby trio took fifth, sixth and seventh place.
Houseman and Hulzebos each enter the tournament as seniors while Abrahamson is in his junior season. Houseman shot a 91 on Thursday and an 85 on Thursday, Abrahamson split an 86 and a 91 and Hulzebos shot a 95 followed by a clutch 84. Hulzebos’ score put him one stroke ahead of Southwest Minnesota Christian’s Jared Fischer and Gavin Rieck and Murray County Central’s Lucas Kuball’s tie for eighth place, narrowly helping him avoid a tiebreaker for the final state slot.
RTR’s Isaac Norgaard led his team with 185 to tie MCC’s Jett Veldhuisen for 13th place while Minneota’s Keaton Jurrens, Lakeview’s Kyle Kurowski and Mason Ommen tied for 15th with 186 strokes.
