Ehlers, Manthei look to get to state

MARSHALL –The Marshall Golf teams had a solid season in 2023 with the Tigers sending one golfer — Luke Ehlers — to the state tournament. Now they’ll look to do even bigger and better things.

Ehlers finished tied for third in last year’s section tournament as a sophomore, making him the only Marshall Tiger to qualify for state. As just a junior last year, Jayden Manthei also finished just a few strokes shy of qualifying for state. The dynamic duo were the Tigers’ top two finishers in section last year and are back and ready for more this season. Yet, Marshall graduated its No. 3, 4 and 5 golfers in Sam Schwarz, Joey Fossum and Zach Kramer. As such, sixth-seeded Drew Parsons — a baseball-to-golf convert — will have an opportunity to step up and show what he’s got.

On the girls side, the Tigers return four of their six varsity scorers from last year’s section championship, the exceptions being their low-scorer in Grace Ehlers and their No. 3 scorer in Eryn Kraft.

Leading the returners this year is sophomore Dayton Webskowski. As a freshman, she placed 23rd in the section meet and was the second-lowest-scoring freshman in the Big South Conference championship.

Also returning as key golfers for the Tigers are Rylee Jacobson and Ali Pederson. Both Jacobson and Pederson are multi-sport athletes, with Jacobson also competing for the Marshall soccer team while Pederson competes for Marshall girls basketball and volleyball.

The Marshall boys golf season kicked off on Monday with Marshall’s Black and Orange teams claiming the top two spots in its home invitational at Marshall Golf Club. The girls team is scheduled to get started today at Marshall Golf Club at 1 p.m.
