ST. PAUL — Despite a disappointing loss to start the day, the Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle Valley/Montevideo United wrestling team bounced back with a pair of dual victories to claim fifth place in the Class AA state tournament at the Xcel Energy Center.

The Blackjacks came into the match unseeded and were matched up against No. 2 Kasson-Mantorville. United led 18-11 before Kasson-Mantorville claimed six consecutive weights to beat the Blackjacks 35-24, knocking them down to the consolation bracket. It marked the second year in a row that Kasson-Mantorville knocked United out in the first round of the team state tournament. United also went on to win the fifth-place bracket last year.

Brady Rhode was one of two Blackjacks, alongside Eli Olson, to pick up a pin against Kasson-Mantorville. Rhode was also the only Blackjack to finish with a pin in each of his three matches on the day. Olson added another two while Gavin Mortenson, Tygan Long, Ben and Daniel Gunlogson, Holland Schacherer, Kameron Sather and Zach DeBeer each had one.

Despite the opening-round loss, the Blackjacks kept fighting. They dominated Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton in their first consolation bracket match to pick up a 46-12 win. United claimed each of the first seven weight classes in the dual to earn its way to the consolation finals.

In the fifth-place dual, Watertown-Mayer-Mayer Lutheran jumped out to a 14-6 lead after claiming three of the first four matches. Yet, United bounced back by winning eight of the final nine to run away with the hardware.

Brady Rhode, Ben and Dan Gunlogson, Eli Olson, Zach DeBeer and Kameron Sather will continue to compete in the individual state tournament today.
