Mustangs overcome early deficit in win over Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs defeated the University of Sioux Falls Cougars on Thursday evening by a final score of 30-20. This win brings the Mustangs to 4-7 overall and 2-7 in the NSIC, while the loss drops the Cougars to 2-12 overall and 0-9 in the NSIC.

The dual began with a pair of forfeits, with Jacob Dykes winning by forfeit at 285, while USF won 125 by forfeit.

133 pounds saw USF’s Beau Klingensmith win by technical fall and USF’s Beau Beavers won at 141 by fall.

Luke Peterson got the Mustangs on track at 149, picking up a technical fall over Cooper Sanders by a score of 17-2.

Sean Howk kept the momentum going for SMSU, defeating Jagger Tyler at 157 by a 5-2 decision.

USF picked up another victory at 165, with Lincoln Fink earning a 5-1 decision, to bring the score to 20-14, in favor of the Cougars.

The Mustangs found their stride starting at 174, with Lucas Hodges earning a fall victory to even the score at 20.

At 184, Adam Sylvester dominated for the Mustangs on his way to a 19-4 technical fall, to put the Mustangs up 25-20.

The final match of the dual came at 197, where Caden Steffen dominated Isaiah Laguna on his way to a technical fall.

The win marks the second time this season where the Mustangs score 30 points against an NSIC opponent, the last time the Mustangs had multiple 30-point performances against NSIC opponents in a season was during the 2013-14 season.

“Tonight was great for our program and our guys,” said third-year head coach Chayse Jackson. “USF showed up and picked up an upset early to get out ahead. Our guys showed great resilience and fight, to battle back and pick up another conference win. They overcame adversity and defeat to pick up this win and showed what they are capable of. I look forward to seeing them toe the line at regions next week! Let’s punch some tickets!”

The Mustangs will return to action on Saturday, Mar. 2 when they travel to Minot, N.D. to take place in the NCAA Super Region V Championships.
