Mauch, McFarquhar each selected to Big South All-Conference teams
The Big South Conference announced its All-Conference selections for gymnastics and girls hockey on Tuesday morning. Senior Cameen McFarquhar was the Tigers’ lone gymnastics selection while freshman Brooklyn Mauch was Marshall’s sole girls hockey honoree.
McFarquhar qualified for the Class A state gymnastics tournament as an individual, placing 25th in the vault and 28th in the uneven bars. She’s also a three-sport athlete, running track and field in the spring and running cross country in the fall. She’s committed to the University of Sioux Falls for cross country after her graduation.
While Mauch was the Tigers’ only first-team selection, the Marshall girls hockey team did have three honorable mentions. Seniors Eliza Holmgren and Olivia Penske — a forward and defense respectively — both earned honorable mention nods, as did sophomore Abbey Foley.
Mauch finished the season with 21 goals and 33 points, both team-highs, Foley added another 15 goals and 25 points to finish second on the team in both categories while Holmgren added 9 goals and 17 points to finish her senior season third on the team in goals and points.
Penske’s eight assists tied her with Holmgren for third on the team behind Mauch, Foley and Kendal Beernaert.
As a group, the Marshall girls hockey team went 17-9-1 on the season. Their 11-2-1 Big South record gave them their first conference title since 2007. They also reached the section championship game for the first time since 2018, the same year as their last state appearance. The now six-time reigning section champion Luverne Cardinals defeated Marshall in the Section 3A title game to prevent the Tigers from heading back to the Xcel Energy Center.
Luverne, New Ulm and Waseca each had three first-team All-Conference selections for girls hockey. Each team each had an honorable mention as well.
In gymnastics, Worthington led the way with four selections while Jackson County Central, New Ulm, St. Peter and Waseca each had another three.
