‘I had nothing to lose’

DeCamp, Marshall pick up dual win over TMB/WWG

MARSHALL — The No.8AA Marshall Tiger wrestling team took down the No.11A TMB Panthers on Thursday night 46-9. The win marked the final regular season dual for Marshall and was also Senior Night for the Tigers. Marshall defeated the Panthers in 10 of 13 weight classes. The win brings the Tigers record to 24-3 on the season. 

At 127 pounds, Marshall’s Dawson DeCamp pulled off a big upset as he defeated returning state champion Devin Carter in a thrilling 3-2 match. After a scoreless first period, Decamp earned an escape to take a 1-0 lead going into the third period. In the third period, Carter took the lead with a 2-point reversal before a second stall call on him tied the match. With just thirty seconds left, DeCamp earned another escape to take the 3-2 lead and fended off a Carter headlock attempt to secure the upset.  

“I went out there thinking that I had nothing to lose,” DeCamp said. “During the match, I just kept pushing through because I thought I can win this. After the match, I had a burst of joy. I feel like I am peaking at the right time for the team.” 

Lincoln Christenson got things rolling for the Tigers with a convincing victory by technical fall over Logan Peterson at 107 pounds. In the match, Christenson came out firing with a quick first takedown and followed that up with two sets of three near-falls. In the second period, Christenson kept scoring until he finished off the match with a technical fall in 3:31.  

The Panthers answered the Tigers’ opening strike with their own win at 114lbs as Weston Martin defeated Levi Kraft 7-5. After a scoreless first period, Kraft got the first as Martin was called for stalling for a second time. The action picked up in the third period as Martin got a 2-point reversal to start the period. Kraft answered with a reversal of his own and two near-falls.  

Martin would not stay down long as he would counter with a reversal and three near-falls of his own at the end of the match to secure the victory. The Tigers bounced back with a win by pin at 121 by No.8AA Landon Marthaler over Troy Gilette to take an 11-3 lead.  

At 133 pounds, No. 1AA Dylan Louwagie extended Marshall’s lead with an 8-3 decision over David Schuh. In the first period, the senior, Louwagie quickly scored the first takedown. Louwagie added another pair of takedowns and a reversal to secure the decision. At 139 pounds for the Tigers Tyson Louwagie took the mat and defeated Damian Alatriste by major decision. The younger Louwagie started off the match with a takedown and ride-out in the first. In the second Louwagie extended his lead with a pair of 3-point near-falls.  

Senior Collin Klenken kept the ball rolling for the Tigers at 145 pounds as he defeated Tyler Arnold with a pin in the second period. Klenken picked up the first-period takedown to take the lead before finishing the match in the second period.  

At 152 pounds TMB got back on board as Jacob Meyer defeated Tiger freshman Brayden Chandler utilizing a series of double leg takedowns. No. 5AA Tate Condezo took on another senior in the Panthers’ Zachary Swanson at 160 pounds. Condezo made quick work of his Panther opponent. After a WWE-style takedown attempt, Condezo hit a big through to end the match with a pin.   

Senior Tucker Fiene took on TMB senior Ashton Squires at 172 pounds. Fiene would utilize several takedowns to build a big lead and win the match by a major decision. Aidan Mattison continued Marshall’s win streak by defeating Gage Struchen by fall at 189 pounds. Mattison quickly scored the first-period takedown and finished off his opponent with a first-period pin.   

In another highly anticipated matchup, Marshall’s Gavin Schaefer squared off against No. 8A Eathan Martinez. The match began with a scoreless first period as each wrestler fended off takedown attempts. In the second, Schaefer got on the scoreboard first. Martinez followed that up with a takedown to take the 2-1 lead. Schaefer would get an escape to tie the match to go into the third. In the third period, Martinez earned a quick escape to take a 3-2 lead.  

The score would not stay like that long as Schaefer got a takedown of his own to take a one-point lead with 36 seconds left. Martinez would not stay down long as he then got a quick escape to re-tie the match. The match would stay tied until overtime when Martinez scored the decisive takedown to win the match.  

At heavyweight Marshall senior Andrew Cowden finished off Senior Night with an overtime win of his own over TMB’s Jack Willhite. After a scoreless first period, the two wrestlers would trade escapes in the second and third periods. After another scoreless period from the feet in the first overtime, Cowden got an escape to go up 2-1 after the first double overtime period. Cowden would then ride out Willhite in the last overtime to earn the victory. 

Marshall girls will wrestle Friday and Saturday in the section tournament in Redwood Falls. The Tigers boys will return to the match next Thursday in the opening rounds of team sections.
