WORTHINGTON — The Marshall girls hockey team defeated the Worthington Trojans 5-0 on Saturday to clinch the Big South Conference championship. The win marks the Tigers’ first conference title since 2007.
Lily Verkinderen, Abbey Foley and Brooklyn Mauch each had a goal and an assist on Friday night. Five minutes into the game, Verkinderen opened the night’s scoring off an assist from Foley and Mauch during a tripping power-play. Three minutes into the second frame, Foley sent an assist from Olivia Penske into the back of the net and Mauch capitalized on a feed from Holmgren to make the score 4-0 through two periods.
Mauch’s points extend her point streak to 10 games now. Her 31 points and 20 goals are both team-highs while Foley is second on the team in both categories with 13 goals and 23 points.
Lily Stelter pitched her fifth shutout of the season in goal for the Tigers, saving each of the four shots she faced. Marshall allowed three first-period shots on goal and then held the Trojans to just one more for the remainder of the game, coming in the third period.
Elsie Deutz scored the Tigers’ second goal of the second period off an assist from Verkinderen. The goal was Deutz’s fourth of the season, all of which have come since Jan. 11.
Kendal Beernaert capped off the night’s scoring with an unassisted goal in the third period.
The Tigers finished the night with 36 shots on goal, 31 of which were saved by Worthington goalie Macie Mahlberg.
Marshall finishes its regular season at 16-8-1 overall and 11-2-1 in conference-play. Behind Marshall’s 23 points, Luverne is second in the Big South with 20 points with a game to play while New Ulm and Minnesota River are each at 18 points with a game to play.
