FAIRMONT — The No. 9 Marshall Tiger Wrestling team improved its season record to 17-3 after taking down two Big South Conference foes on Thursday night in Fairmont. The Tigers started the night by defeating the St. Peter Saints 52-15. They followed up that effort by defeating the Fairmont-Martin County West Redbulls 53-15.

The Tigers began the evening with an impressive 53-15 victory over the Saints. The Saints and Tigers traded falls at the first four weights with Lincoln Christenson and Landon Marthaler picking up pins for the Tigers at 114 and 127 pounds respectively. Following a hard-fought loss by Dawson DeCamp at 133, the Tigers went on a roll winning the last eight weights.

The Louwagie brothers started the run of victories for Marshall. Older brother Dylan won 8-4 over Ryan Moelter and was followed by his younger brother Tyson, who defeated Evan Walter by a score of 5-1. Matt Her took the mat for the Tigers at 152 pounds and picked up the major decision with a 16-4 win over Deontre Torres. After forfeit wins by Tate Condezo, and Tucker Fiene the Tigers finished out the dual with pins by Aidan Mattison, Gavin Schaefer and AJ Haas.

Following the victory over the Saints, the Tigers continued momentum against the Red Bulls. After picking up wins via forfeit at 107, 114, and 127; Dawson DeCamp lost a hard-fought match against Torrey Paplow at 133 pounds. Dylan Louwagie followed that effort up with a pin against Evan Welcome. Tyson Louwagie then defeated Maddox Faber 7-2.

After an 11-2 loss at 152 pounds by Matt Her to Bear Kosbab the Tigers went on a roll winning the last 5 matches. At 160, Tate Condezo picked up a win by technical fall with a 19-3 score.

At 172 pounds, the fans were treated to the match of the night as Marshall’s Tucker Fiene defeated Taylor Austin 4-3 in double overtime. With the match tied 2-2 at the end of regulation, the two wrestlers went scoreless in the first overtime as neither wrestler could secure a takedown. In the first half of double overtime, Fiene scored one point from a stall call against Austin and another point from an escape to take a 4-2 lead in the second half of double overtime. In the second half of double overtime, Austin earned an escape point to make the score 4-3. Fiene then successfully fended off Austin’s last-second attacks to win the match.

Following Fiene’s exciting victory, the Tigers closed out the dual with three falls as Aidan Mattison, Gavin Schafer and AJ Haas all earned first-period pins against their opponents.

Following the victories Senior Tucker Fiene said “I thought the team wrestled great. We went out there, competed hard and won many matches.”

The Tigers will return to action Saturday as they travel to Hutchinson for the Hutchinson Individual Tournament.
