Road-warrior Tigers take down Roadcrew and Warriors

PEQUOT LAKES — The No. 8 Marshall Tigers were road warriors on Friday as they traveled to Pequot Lakes to take on and defeat the Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Roadcrew and the Brainerd Warriors. The Tigers improved their season record to 21-3 with the pair of dual wins.

Marshall began their night by defeating the Warriors of Brainerd 50-13. Marshall jumped out to an early 5-0 lead as Lincoln Christenson defeated Crewe Dahlheimer by technical fall at 107 pounds.

At 114 pounds, eighth grader Levi Kraft gave a valiant effort in a close 4-2 loss. Landon Marthaler got Marshall back on the winning path at 121 pounds with a pin in 5:54. Marthaler’s pin was his 50th career pin.

At 127 pounds, Dawson DeCamp utilized a last-second escape to capture a 6-5 decision over Nolan Jukish.

Jukish began the match by getting the first takedown. An unfazed DeCamp quickly used a switch to get the reversal to tie the match at two. DeCamp would take the lead in the second period and hold on to it until late in the third when Jukish would score his second takedown of the match to tie the match at five. With just seconds remaining, DeCamp would get to his feet and get away for the one-point escape and the win.

At 133 pounds and 139 pounds, the Louwagie brothers both picked up wins for the Tigers as No. 1 ranked Dylan pinned Jackson Loreno and Tyson defeated Cale Ostrowski 5-1. The Warriors earned their second victory of the night with No. 4 Easton Dircks defeating Collin Klenken with a 14-4 major decision. The 145-pound victory would be Brainerd’s last until the final bout of the night, as the Tigers would win the next five matches.

Starting at 152 pounds Marshall picked up 4 pins in a row to put the dual out of reach. Freshman Brayden Chandler started off the run of pins for the Tigers.

After a scoreless first period against senior Elijah German, Chandler was able to turn his opponent to his back and pick up the fall.

No. 5 ranked Tate Condezo followed up Chandler’s pin with a first-period pin of his own. At 172 pounds Tucker Fiene established an early lead before getting the second-period pin.

Aidan Mattison would earn Marshall’s fastest pin of the dual with a 43-second pin at 189 pounds.

At 215 pounds Gavin Schaefer picked up a 7-3 decision to earn his 75th career win before the Warriors would win the final match of the night as the Brainerd heavyweight was able to fend off an AJ Haas throw attempt and end up a fall of his own.

For the final dual of the night, the Tigers defeated the PLPRB Road Crew 40-16. For this dual, the Tigers used eighth grader Gavin Williams at 107 pounds to get the 11-5 win over Tucker Johnson. Williams fell behind early but used several takedowns to take the lead and get the win.

Lincoln Christenson then bumped up 114 pounds and earned his second technical fall of the night over Bryce Mick. In the match, Christenson used a series of takedowns and near-falls to expand his lead to 19-4 for the technical fall. At 121 pounds, Marthaler got his second pin of the night before DeCamp fell 7-3 to Parker Zutter. Following the DeCamp and Zutter battle, Dylan Louwagie picked up another technical fall for the Tigers to remain unbeaten on the season.

At 139 pounds, Tyson Louwagie wrestled Sean Kilpatrick. After a scoreless first period, Louwagie got on the board first with an escape to make the score 1-0. Louwagie would then methodically extend his lead to finish with the 7-0 decision.

At 145 pounds, Collin Klenken earned a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Brady Ruhl by scoring the only takedown of the match late in the second period and fending off several scoring attempts in the third period.

After a major decision victory by the Road Crew at 152 pounds, the Tigers’ Condezo and Fiene added two more pins to their night to extend the Tigers’ lead to 37-7. At 189 pounds Aidan Mattison and Payton Scott faced off in a rematch of a bout from earlier in the season, in which Mattison won 2-1. In this match, Scott built an early lead, but Mattison would not go down without a fight as he was able to get a takedown with 30 seconds left to make the score 5-4. Mattison then intentionally let Scott go to try to tie the match, but Scott was able to fend off a last-second takedown attempt by Mattison to win 6-4.

At 215 pounds, Gavin Schaefer would get takedown first, but then quickly reverse his opponent to tie the match. Schaefer then expanded his lead to win by decision. In the final bout of the evening AJ Haas would just miss a headlock before being pinned by No. 7 ranked Riley Peters.

The 21-3 Tigers will return to action against the Waseca Blue Jays and the Blue Earth Buccaneers in Waseca next Thursday.
