Klumper sets WWG school record for 3-pointers in win

WWG 57, HBC 43

HILLS — Izzy Klumper drained four 3-pointers in the Westbrook-Walnut Grove girls basketball team’s 57-43 win over Hills-Beaver Creek on Thursday night. Klumper now sits at 189 career 3-pointers after coming into the game tied with Grace Woelber at 185.

Hills-Beaver Creek came into the game undefeated against Minnesota opponents. The then-4-1 Patriots’ only loss of the year came against Central Lyon, Iowa on Saturday. The Chargers, meanwhile, continue to stay red-hot with six consecutive wins by double-digit margins. This is the only one of those games in which they scored fewer than 60 points.

In addition to Klumper’s 20 points, Addison Jenniges contributed 14 points while Riley Parker added another 7.

Klumper had already set the school record for 3-pointers in a game with nine in a 35-point outing against Wabasso.

Westbrook-Walnut Grove (8-1) will face off against Dawson-Boyd at Southwest Minnesota State University on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

MCC 51, MLA/C 50

MOUNTAIN LAKE — The Murray County Central girls basketball team narrowly survived a scare from Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey on Thursday night, taking down the Wolverines 51-50 to snap a five-game skid. 

Jayda Hellewell led the Rebels’ effort with a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double in the win. Four of her rebounds came on the offensive glass. 

Kelli Miller finished as the team’s leading scorer on 5-of-11 shooting, including 3-of-8 from 3-point range, while Kate Blankenship tied Hellewell for a team-high in rebounds and also contributed 7 points.

Ava Deacon dished out four of the Rebels’ 12 assists and tied Thea Schneider with a team-high two steals.

Murray County Central (3-5) will have nearly two weeks off before its next game when it hosts Canby on Tuesday, Jan. 2 at 7:15 p.m.

YME 47, LQPV 34

MADISON — Despite an 0-5 start to the season, the Yellow Medicine East girls basketball team continued to head up on Friday night with a 47-34 road victory over Lac qui Parle Valley four its third win in its last four games.

Bayli Sneller was the Sting’s leading scorer, finishing with 10 points on three made 3-pointers. Coming in behind her, Klaira Shackelford and Alana Almich each added 8 points while Ella Cherveny contributed another 7. All of Cherveny’s points came in the first half while all of Shackelford’s came in the second.

Yellow Medicine East (3-6) will play a pair of games in Windom next week. They’ll face Windom Area on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. and then an opponent to be determined at a time to be determined on Thursday.

PREP BOYS BASKETBALL

Dawson-Boyd 74, Pipestone Area 73

DAWSON — Brayson Boike scored 27 points on Friday night to lead the NO. 2 Dawson-Boyd boys basketball team to a 74-73 win over Class 2A Pipestone.

Boike’s scoring came efficiently, shooting 8-of-16 from inside the arc and 3-of-8 from beyond it. In addition to just scoring, his nine rebounds tied Pipestone’s Rysley Borman for a team-high.

Borman was the game’s leading scorer, finishing with 29 points on 26 attempts.

Drew Hjelmeland’s four assists, four blocks and two steals were all team-highs. Carson Stratmoen also contributed 11 points and three assists.

Dawson-Boyd (7-0) will look to continue its undefeated start to the season at the Rushford-Peterson Holiday Tournament next week. The Blackjacks will play Baldwin-Woodville, Wis. on Wednesday at noon and then Hayfield on Thursday at 3 p.m.

RRC 66, Springfield 59

SPRINGFIELD — After trailing by 16 points at halftime, the Red Rock Central boys basketball team locked in defensively to pull out a 66-59 road win over Springfield on Friday night.

The Falcons found themselves in a 44-28 hole heading into the locker room after 18 minutes. Yet, they managed to hold the Tigers to 15 second-half points to secure the come-from-behind win.

Isaac Simonson put together a 20-point, 20-rebound double-double while also contributing five blocks. Jayden Lang was the Falcons’ leading scorer in the game with 24 points and Corey Arkell added another 10.

Red Rock Central (4-5) will try to secure its third consecutive win when it faces Renville County West at Southwest Minnesota State University on Friday at 1:45 p.m.
