SMSU upsets conference-leading St. Cloud

ST. CLOUD — The Southwest Minnesota State University women’s soccer team (4-9-1, 4-6-1 NSIC) earned a 1-0 victory over the top first place in the NSIC, the St. Cloud State Huskies (12-3-1, 9-2-1 NSIC) on Sunday.

The first half saw both teams battling for the upper hand with each team coming close to scoring. Arguably the best look for the Mustangs came in the sixth minute when Madi Foutz had a long shot ricochet off of the crossbar.

The Huskies also had their fair share of scoring opportunities as they earned a penalty kick in the 20th minute. Still, Kenna Conley made the save on the match. She tallied a total of eight in the clean-sheet victory.

Overall in the first half, the Mustangs had four shots on goal compared to the Huskies’ five shots on goal.

The second half was a similar story, as both teams were fighting for the upper hand. The Mustangs took the upper hand in the 80th minute when sophomore Brooke Wetterstrom made a pass to set up junior forward Sydney Johnson, who scored her first career goal for the Mustangs to take the lead.

Just as they had the whole game, the Mustangs’ defense held strong over the final 10 minutes, holding the Huskies scoreless to secure the victory.

With this win, SMSU has 13 conference points. The top eight teams will make the NSIC tournament. Wayne State is currently in eighth place with 17 conference points.

The final three games for the Mustangs will all be at home. The next game will be against Northern State (4th in the NSIC, 20 conference points) on Friday at 5 p.m. That match will be followed by an Oct. 29th showdown with MSU Moorhead (12th in the NSIC, 10 conference points) with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. and the final match of the regular season for the Mustangs will be on Thursday, Nov. 2, when they host Augustana (5th in the NSIC, 20 conference points) at 5 p.m.
