Canby/Minneota boys, girls win Camden Conference

Cross country conference meet roundup Oct. 2023

CANBY — The Canby/Minneota cross country team had the top individuals in both the boys and girls races at the Camden Conference Championship Meet on Tuesday afternoon and rode their top finishers to a pair of team titles.

In the girls meet, the Lancers swept the top three spots. Braelyn Merritt led the way at 20:07.11 followed by Claire Stoks at 20:37.45 and Mya Pesek at 21:06.88.

Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd’s Chloe Gloege and Border West’s Julia Schmidt took fourth and sixth place respectively to break up an otherwise all-Lancer top eight. Jordyn Jostock placed fifth for Canby at 21:45 while Taylor Ourada and Ava Danielson placed seventh and eighth at 21:53 and 22:03.

The Canby/Minneota girls fielded a team score of 17 points to run away with the meet. LQPV/DB was the meet runner-up with 51 points while Central Minnesota Christian took third at 81.

Tracy-Milroy-Balaton and Lakeview rounded out team scores at 112 and 122 respectively.

Marin Knott was the Panthers’ top finisher, taking 11th place at 23:05, while Emma Timmerman led the way for the Lakers at 23:46 to take 16th place.

The boys race was much closer, but Canby/Minneota still edged out runner-up LQPV/DB, 33-37. Lakeview placed third with 81 points while Ortonville and TMB finished at 104 and 115.

Zach Ourada was the individual conference champion at 17:11.93, beating out LQPV/DB’s Gavin Carl by 12 seconds. Blake Giese also finished fourth for the Lancers at 17:58.

Cole Remiger ran a time of 18:17.15 to place sixth for the Lakers while Carter Sweetman was the fastest finisher for the Panthers at 19:42.96, edging out Lakeview’s Tate Remiger by five seconds.

Taden Clark and Eli Hegland placed seventh and eighth respectively for LQPV/DB but the Lancers responded with Tallen Merritt and Jack Abrahamson right on their tail at 18:46 and 19:06. James Weber came in as the No. 4 runner for the Eagles at 19:18 but Canby/Minneota’s Hunter Danielson shut the door on LQPV by placing 12th at 19:30.

Zach Ourada, Giese, Merritt and Abrahamson all received All-Conference honors for the Canby/Minneota boys while Merritt, Stocks, Pesek, Jostock, Taylor Ourada and Ava Danielson all were named All-Conference for the girls.

The Lancers will next compete at the 3A Section Meet next Thursday in Madison.

Red Rock Conference

MOUNTAIN LAKE — The Murray County Central/Fulda girls cross country team narrowly beat out Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey/Red Rock Central for a Red Rock Conference title on Monday afternoon. In the boys race, the teams flipped and it was the Wolverines coming away with the win over the Rebels.

In the girls race, MLA-C/RRC’s Meghan Johnson was the top finisher at 20:37 but MCC/F’s Mara Clarke finished right behind her at 20:41.

After Heron Lake-Okabena’s Eryn Salentiny crossed the line for third, the Rebels and Wolverines proceeded to trade blows for the next several places. Katie Johnson crossed at 21:04 for the Wolverines but the Rebels responded with Sophia Nelson and Brylei Schreier at 21:04 and 21:13. Julia Brinkman kept the Wolverines within striking range by taking seventh place at 21:21 but Laiken Farris rounded out the Rebels’ scorers one spot back at 21:35 to seal the MCC/Fulda victory.

Lydia Rete also placed 10th for MLA-C/RRC at 22:03 and Celia Vogel and Hannah Beyer took 16th and 17th at 22:55 and 23:01.

Russell-Tyler-Ruthton finished in fourth with a team total of 92 points. Summer Labrune led the team in ninth place at 21:52 while Autumn Labrune finished in 14th at 22:27.

Like in the girls race, MLA-C/RRC and MCC/Fulda found themselves in a barn-burner. The race remained competitive throughout but MLA-C/RRC held on to win 38-40. RTR also placed fifth with 115 points.

Koday Wassman led the way for the Wolverines with a 16:18 first-place finish. Zach Klassen and Ethan Schroeder took fifth and sixth for MLA-C/RRC at 17:01 and 17:26 while Tyrone Stout also finished eighth at 17:37. Joseph Torres rounded out the team’s scorers at 18:36 in 18th place.

Logan Roelofs placed second overall for RTR at 16:37, beating out MCC/Fulda’s Evan Baumgardner by two seconds, while Aidan Johnson placed 19th for the Knights at 18:52. The two were the Knights’ only top-30 finishers.

The Rebels’ strength on the day was in their depth. Jon Olsem placed seventh for MCC/Fulda at 17:27 and was followed by five more Rebels in the top 15.

Silas and Matthew Stapek finished in ninth and 10th place at 17:32 and 17:54 respectively while Caleb Ethridge finished one spot behind them at 18:01. Caleb Appel and Alexander Betz also placed 13th and 15th at 18:16 and 18:19 respectively.

RTR and MCC/Fulda will next compete in the Section 3A Championship at Madison Golf Course next Thursday while MLA-C/RRC will race at the 2A Championship at Baylor Park in Norwood Young America.
