MARSHALL — Hannah Gordon went into the Marshall girls soccer team’s Thursday matchup against Fairmont tied for the program record for career goals. She surpassed that and then some, netting a pair to help the Tigers to a 4-1 win.
“I’m just really proud of my team because I couldn’t do this without them. I’m just proud of the strides that we’ve made and accomplishing something that no one’s done yet,” Gordon said. “My coach kind of sent me the record from previous season, so I knew that was a goal to set, but that obviously wasn’t my goal for the game… the biggest thing is to win as a team, so I think we accomplished that tonight.”
The front end of Gordon’s brace came in the second half. The Tigers had a 2-0 lead and, after getting the ball in close to the net earlier in the half, she took the ball into the middle of the box and fired off a shot into the top-right corner of the net, just glancing off the goalkeeper’s fingertips, to give Marshall a 3-0 lead.
“First, she can score with both legs, left and right, from almost any distance. She’s a midfielder that comes as second line and gets a lot of rebounds for other shots and she follows the play to the end,” Marshall head coach Jose Losada-Montero said when asked what allowed Gordon to break the record.
“So she might make the first pass, follow the play and then finish the pass. I think just shooting with the left and right and then following the play constantly allows her to [score].”
The goal was her 15th career goal, breaking her tie with Maddie Van Keulen and Lenei Estrada. She also already held the Marshall girls soccer program record for assists.
“I think just staying calm and finding my teammates. Also, kudos to them for scoring off those goals. I mean, I couldn’t have done this without them scoring… it’s a team sport, so I couldn’t do it without them,” Gordon said.
Not satisfied with the record, Gordon also netted another one with under 16 minutes remaining to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead.
Fairmont scored its loan goal of the game in the final seven minutes. Marshall had already substituted in much of its bench and the Cardinals were unable to make any sort of comeback.
The Tigers scored early and often in the first half, taking a 2-0 lead into the break. Elsie Deutz scored by grabbing a loose ball in the box, beating the Fairmont defenders, and sending a shot into the bottom left of the net for a 2-0 Marshall lead.
While Marshall made its offense look effortless, Losada-Montero said the team needed some time to adjust to the Fairmont defensive line, which he said congested the midfield and made it difficult to get the ball deep in Cardinal territory. Still, they made the necessary adjustments and the offense soared.
“There’s not a lot of space for us to play in the middle, but they create a lot of space in the back,” Losada-Montero said. “It took a lot of time for us to find where the free space was in the game… so we started to make more through balls and more long passes and once we realized where the space was, I think that helped us to understand the game.”
Marshall (3-3) will go on the road to face Waseca for its next game on Saturday at 10 a.m.
